I plan to run Windows 2003 Server, Oracle, Apache Tomcat and a couple of other memory intense enterprise software applications on my home dual boot machine(Vista will be the other OS). I wanted a slim machine that didn't cost a lot and that is one of the reasons I went w/ the Dell Inspiron 531s w/ the E6550 CPU(2.33 Ghz).
I already recogniated that I need at least 3 GB of RAM and would probably benefit from 4 GB of RAM with what I am trying to do. Currently I have two 512 mb DDR2 667 sticks.
Given this information, any educated guess of how much faster DDR2 800 RAM would be then DDR2 667 if I took out the original memory? (I don't know that much about memory but I realize the DDR2 will operate at the slower speed if the machine has both DDR2 667 and DDR2 800) Does anyone have an estimate in percentage terms of how much faster DDR2 800 might be then DDR2 667 with an E6550 CPU? I realize the hard disk is the true bottle neck on many computer systems. I have no plans to substantially upgrade this system with a new CPU, I simply plan to replace the machine in about 3.5 years with another computer that doesn't cost a fortune. Thanks.
