Recommended CPU upgrade from 2.4ghz Opeteron?

I'm looking to upgrade my current setup a bit. Currently, I have a 1.8ghz dual core opeteron sitting @ 2.4 ghz, with 2gb off ddr.

Is there an affordable, sizable, intel upgrade over this chip? I've been out of the loop for a couple years now, so I'd like to hear what's a good value these days.

Thanks!

Complete system upgrade? Just replacing a few parts?

What do you have now?
CPU Socket?
Memory?
Graphics card?
Power Supply?

Budget?

Budget is around ~200 USD for the cpu, 100 USD for the mobo. Of course, if the new processor requires new memory, I'd be willing to spend ~200.

My current system:

DC Opteron @ 2.4ghz, skt 939
ASRock Dual 939
ATI X1800XT
2gb (x1gb sticks) Crucial Value DDR
Antec TP 450w psu

So, it's an alright system. I was just curious if an upgrade, at the listed pricepoint, would provide any sizeable performance increases in everyday computing, and light gaming (WoW, other random FPS's)

I'm assuming he has 939, but since he's been out of the loop for a couple of years I doubt he has a 775 setup. The most affordable good Intel setup that would get you where you wanna go would be based on a Core 2 Duo, I suggest grabbing an E4300 and a 2GB matched pair kit of DDR2 RAM, DDR2 800 if you can swing it, but 667 would be fine, because even with DDR2 667 at stock speed if you can get an E4300 to go that high, which shouldn't be a problem, the proc will be 3GHz. There are some really nice deals listed in the Hot Deals section. Get a P965 based motherboard.

Here's some stuff:

and, assuming you have a decent psu and a pci-e video card, you should be set with that.

EDIT: Very few motherboards that support C2D support DDR RAM, so it's in your best interest to just get a good board and DDR2, then resell your DDR RAM. What make/model is the RAM? No matter what it is, you should very easily be able to make $100 off of it in the FS/FT forum.

If the only intensive thing you do is play WoW and an occasional FPS, isn't your current rig good enough?

From what I've seen you're not going to get a huge performance increase by upgrading and are probably better off just waiting longer and then doing a full upgrade, unless you really need the cutting edge performance.

Oddly, I still get slowdown when I play both at modest resoultions. Not sure if it's a CPU problem, or a video card problem.
