Looking for recommendations. Time to replace an Onkyo receiver that is having issues, shuts off every time a volume spike happens. So wanting to spend in neighborhood of 500. What is the general consensus on current models? Onkyo still having issue with HDMI and heat? Refurbs a good idea?

Thanks
Rick

I think Onkyo fixed their HDMI issue. I have a refurb 818 i got from their official store. its been solid for the time that ive had it, no heat or HDMI issues

But if you dont want to go with another Onkyo whatever Denon is now ~500 will most likely work nicely

Im old school. I stick with my pre-HDMI denon receivers. The last one I purchased was the 3805 and it still kicks ass.

Watch Newegg for specials on the Yamaha Aventage line (a820 in the past). They sometimes knock them down below $500 when they MSRP over $1k. Very good deal for that price.

Wanna buy another.....?
I replaced my 3805 with a 3313CI.
Heck, I still have the Sony 900ES that the 3805 replaced.

What are you going to connect to the unit (speakers and components) and how will you tend to use it?

I will be hooking up to a set of Onkyo speakers from one of their HTIB 7 speaker sets and a powered sub. I will be primarily using it to watch movies and media. Occasional streaming music from Pandora or such. Main use will be movies though.

If you have a Fry's nearby, I would wait for the Denon E400 to go on sale for $299 (just $199 sometimes if you're really lucky). It has a high level of Audyssey room correction which will EQ your regular speakers as well as the sub and has a huge number of networking features (pandora, spotify, etc.). Yes, you said your budget is $500 but there's really no reason to get more than the E400 for what you're going to use it for. Fry's seems to put this on sale at least once a month. You could take the money you save and start a fund for something better than HTIB speakers.

Exactly, no need for anything more expensive to drive the OP's speaker system. Your suggestion will work very nicely for now and will easily handle future speaker upgrades.
