Recommended: 7800GT.. What to get?

A game that I want recommends a 7800GT (min. requirements includes a 6800GT). I'll be building a new machine, e7200 + 4GB, so Im trying to figure out what GPU I should grab. Not a big gamer as you can tell.

Any suggestions? Is a HD4670 comparable to a 7800GT?

I'd say a 96GT, but I'm bias as I have one...LOL. Like you I am only a casual gamer, but the 96GT is fine @ 16x10 for me. What size lcd panel do you have?

Radeon HD 3870
will be a better choice.

The HD 3870 costs the same (AR) as the HD4670 and it is faster according to Anand's benches

Also, to answer your question,
HD4670 is at least 100% faster than the 7800GT
As indicated in this chart

HD4670 is tad faster than HD3850 and slower than HD3870

Skip the 3870 and get a 9600GSO for $50 after rebate, with a free game! Stock, it will outperform a 3870. Overclocked, it will equal a 9800GT in performance.

Anand's benches (quoted above) do indicate that the HD3870 is faster than the 9600GSO, so your statement is not exactly true. Still, 9600GSO is a good card...
I have decided to to recommend ATI because the OP wanted to go the ATI route...

LOL, a 9600GSO does not outperform an HD3870 (nor a 9600GT), unless the game heavily favors nVidia hardware.

But any of these cards will be much faster than a 7800GT and are all affordable, so take your pick (these are roughly ordered from lowest to highest performing):
9600GSO/8800GS
HD3850 512MB
HD4670
HD3870/9600GT
9800GT/8800GT

The current card that is most closest in performance to the 7800GT would have to be the 9500GT (or 8600GTS), which should also be the cheapest card of the ones mentioned.

but if you can spend a little..I've seen 8800GT's for ~100 ish and 9800GT's for ~160?

I haven't found an 8800GT for less than $150...then again, I haven't looked incredibly hard either so I'm not doubting you.

The 9600GSO is a 8800GS that has been put on a cheaper PC board. Its only worth about 50$ quality wise. I'd go with a 4670 since the 3870 still has broken MSAA tech in it. It might brute force its way in most things in its price range but the 4670 runs cooler, takes less power and has functioning MSAA ( even if 2x is all you get due to mem. bandwidth).
