Recommendations? (video card related)

my video card (a radeon 8500) just crapped out on my, and i have several options available. since i will be going to college next fall, i plan to build a new computer, but thats a year away. should i rma my 8500(still under warranty), and use that until i build a new computer, or should i get a budget card (with dx9 features) so i can play games like doom3 and hl2, and then upgrade next year? basically, what im asking is should i tough it out with my 8500, or should i get a budget dx9 card (ie radeon 9000 or 9200) and then upgrade again next year?

no no no... i dont want to get the best thing now, if im going to upgrade again next year!
