Hey everyone, thanks for the plethora of good advice.

Veri745- I ran Spybot and it erased some stuff, but my system seems less stable now.

F4Phantom2500- I replaced my old HD with the new 500GB HD because the old one was going bad.

Virtual Larry- I would love to build my own PC, just don't know how. I've looked up a few articles and it seems like a headache. I do have frys close by. Can you give me an idea of what to get? 1tb HD, 4GB Ram, win7 and a dual core processor is what I'm looking to have. Thanks.

Ehume- I ran the disk error check, but when it was done it didn't say anything. I don't notice a difference in performance either. I didn't run the defrag though, running out of day. Probably do tomorrow.

Tweakboy- My Task Manager says I have 33 processes running. Is that a lot? I have attempted to google them and delete unnecessary ones in the past, but it's pretty tedious and don't want to erase something I need. I could probably blow out the dust of my PC, will can air do the trick?

0roo0roo- I returned the 2GB because it DID made my PC run slower. I read a bunch of stuff on web saying that means PC is beyond upgradable. That was my last hope at making the PC run quick again.

Heyheybooboo- I installed HiJacker. I'll run it when I get off to go to bed and post results tomorrow for you to dissect. Thanks.

KonaKona- As stated early above, I'd love to build my own PC, just don't have the confidence that it'll be stable. What do I need to do? I've looked this up before, seems a little daunting. I'm mechanically inclined, just not very computer literate. I'm looking at the Emachines ET1831-07 for about $374. It's in my price range $400-$500 and has the 1TB, Win7, dual core processor and 4MB of ram I'm looking for in a new PC. It got really good ratings. If you can tell me how to build a comprable PC for cheaper from Fry's I'm all ears. I have a Fry's 10 min from me...

RichieRich- That sounds like a great deal, but I'm not a fan of much of anything that's refurbished, especially a PC I hope to have for another 5 yrs. or so.

So basically everyone, my PC is limping along right now. I can't find my XP disk, so I'm out of luck right now for a clean install. I might be able to get one from a friend to try a clean install. My PC's really unstable, my pictures folder always freezes up and when I have to close it the toolbar on the bottom of my PC disappears and I need to restart my PC. Stuff like that is normal daily. Or like yesterday it literally took 4 min for my PC to open a picture to preview from the pictures folder.

I'm really considering getting the Emachines ET1831-07 PC. It has Win7, 4MB RAM, 1TB HD and dual core processor, for under $400, everything I'm looking for. I read great reviews on it and it beats the performance of other pricier PC's. This seems like the best option right now. I may have enough money saved by next month to get it, hopefully I don't throw my PC out the window before then. Any more suggestions are welcome. I"m still trying some things mentioned on here to "fix" this sorry excuse for a PC.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] "CProgram Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide

Microsoft Security Essentials should disable Windows Defender. I don't even have a Program Files\Windows Defender folder anymore.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "CProgram Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

This is just unnecessary.

But neither of these would account for your system becoming progressively more unstable.

Can you go into Task Manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and give us a screenshot of your performance tab? (alt+Print screen then paste it in Paint. Save and upload to an image hosting site)
If something is leaking memory, we should be able to tell.

Also, did you check that your CPU was clear of dust and the fan working? If it's too hot it'll throttle down and things will be REALLY slow.

And don't be afraid to Start->Run->msconfig, go under startup, disable all and reboot. If that fixes the problem we can reenable them one at a time to figure out what was causing the problem

I hope you meant 4GB of RAM. Other than that, it sounds good. I built some AMD quad-cores for $350, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, integrated video (760G), 24X DVD burner, etc. but that wasn't including the cost of Win7, which is around $100.

Nothing really wrong with Dell refurbs, infact I've bought many for friends and relatives with no issues (over 25 systems). I just gave away a refurbed Dell 700m to a family member that I bought back in '05 that's still running strong with original HD and everything.

And now there are Dell 570s in the outlet with a little bit better processor for $10 cheaper. $250 after 15% off coupon including taxes and free shipping. Can't really beat that.

Dominion- I'm pasting my task manager screen shot below. I haven't blown out my pc yet, but fan is running fast. can i use the canned air to do this?

Larry- of course i meant GB, oops. haha

Rich-I didn't see anything that cheap on dell. i say some $450 560's, not $250 570's though...

Ok, it looks like quantity of RAM's an issue. You're into the swap file with just Firefox running, with a peak usage of almost 800 megs on a 512 meg machine.
That's gonna cripple any machine.

Go into Start->Run, type "msconfig", go into the Startup tab, click Disable All, and reboot. That should give you over 100MB more to play with.
This will disable your antivirus, so don't go surfing any porn yet. We'll see if we have enough overhead later to re-enable antivirus, but for now we're troubleshooting, so let's get all of that out of the way for now.

After reboot, see how your computer feels. If it's better, don't bother with the next steps, just come back here.

If it's not, download speedfan: http://www.almico.com/speedfan440.exe
Run it and tell us your Core Temp.

And yes, you can use canned air to blow out your CPU heatsink.

Start-> Run-> msconfig-> Startup-> Everything Off
Start-> Run-> msconfig-> Services-> Hide All Microsoft Services-> Everything Off

(don't know if the second tab is availible on xp, if its not ur gonna have to turn some selective services (quicktime,Itunes, ect.) off manually and I can walk you through that

Ok, so I turned off everything. and it's faster, not blazing of course, but runs normal now while opening and browsing my pictures folder. it's still pretty slow though. here's the screen shots of my processes and load on PC now with everything disabled on startup. I ran speed fan for the heck of it and it checked out at 47C.

NAS!

turn your old computer into a NAS!!!

I would honestly pick up an AMD X4 system to replace your P4 system.

It would be a noticeable upgrade.

agree'd

you should really build one yourself tho.

you could probably meet budget on an AMD system.

And then you can convert your old system into:

1. HTPC
2. Guest computer
3. Network Attached Storage Box.

:D

Well, due to the format, we've spent 5 days doing 3 minutes worth of work. :/

Your temps look ok enough that CPU throttling probably isn't a culprit.
Since you don't have your XP disk, download Intel's chipset identification utility from http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-009266.htm

Then search for your board's INF installer: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx?iid=subhdr+dnlds_drivers

Buying another computer is up to you, but your P4 is probably good enough for what you do.
My brother-in-law plays EVE on an Athlon 64 3200+, and it works great. (With a Geforce 8800GTS)

i've spent a couple weeks and countless hours working on this hunk over here. last night i turned off all startup processes except ms security suite, it still runs msmpeng.exe i thought only defender ran that. it eats up a lot of my memory. I'm just puzzled why the 2gb of ram i installed made my pc run slower, i thought that was supposed to be the fix for an old slow pc...

why is the Task Manager pic showing 512MB of ram when you have 2GB?

I think you should install XP anew. Borrow your friend's disk. If you have a legit version, I think there are programs that can extract your key (or someone here might know how to do it without software). Combine that with some of the suggestions here and you will be happy as you spent nothing and will have a pc faster than it was new.

OK, I see, you removed the 2GB. Looks like you returned it also. Never heard of swap behaviors before. You don't need to adjust anything when you add ram.

Nope, that along with msseces.exe is Microsoft Security Essentials.

Sometimes modules just don't like certain motherboards, certain slots, or don't get along with other RAM.
RAM is a lot more finicky now than it was in the PC100 SDRAM days.

Oh wow that even has a PATA connector, so that's that concern taken care of.
But he'll need RAM too.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231170

That's $200 shipped.

Although that eMachines does also look good. To get Windows 7 on the Athlon system would be another $100, and the eMachines comes with another 1TB and 2GB RAM more.

It's too bad Dells have skyrocketed in price. A few months ago you could get a Vostro with a C2D 7400, 2GB, and Win7 with monitor for $400. Today you're looking at $550 without monitor.

512MB of RAM just isn't enough for a fully updated Windows XP machine. You want to have at the very least 768MB, and if you do anything strenuous then 2GB is good. But I really don't recommend you spend much money on this thing, however you really should have more RAM.
