Amsterdam was a blur for me, too. I was living in london and booked a bus trip across the Ferry. It was a long drive, but it was cheap and all included, with a boat tour and bus to a little village with a dairy and clog maker (you could buy cheese and wooden shoes), with windmills and antique shops. I bought an awesome magnifying glass. There seem to be a bunch of those little village attractions (don't remember the name of mine), do some googling for "Amsterdam Excursions."

There are awesome bars all around, many specializing in Belgian beer, buy it and enjoy sweet creaminess. Just don't smoke weed in the bar.

The Rijksmuseum is awesome. It's really close to the Heineken brewery, so you can make both in an afternoon. The Heineken tour was closed when we were there, though, so I just did the museum. That area's really nice, too, with a park with this sign:

It's on a light rail line that goes down to the red light district, if you're staying at a hostel there.

lol, I had to look it up:

Storyline
3 backpackers are in Amsterdam where they get locked out of their youth hostel. They are invited into a man's house where he tells them of a hostel somewhere in eastern Europe where the women are all incredibly hot and have a taste for American men. When they get there, everything is too good to be true - the hostel is "to die for"

I think the morals to this story are to not get locked out of your Amsterdam hostel, not trust random dutchmen, and not to stay in eastern european hostels. Amsterdam Hostels are fine, apparently :p

I wouldn't say that the red light district is "clean," but it's no dirtier than most other cities its size in the downtown area. Outside of the red light district, however, it's probably the cleanest big city I've ever been to.

You are still able to smoke weed, they didn't event ask for ID. I saw a guy the other night with the largest joint I've ever seen smoking in public, it was literally a foot long lol.

you should be able to get a tourist's pass, I thought.

or at least, that was one of the proposals.

Not that I've read. I'm sure this isn't the last of it. Once hotels and restaurants start feeling the drop in tourism, I'm sure there will be push back.

The law doesn't take effect until next year in Amsterdam.
