Hi,

I'm in the market for a video capture/tuner card. Here's what I'm going to be using it for, in order of highest to lowest usage:

1. Transfer of old VHS movies to digital format, then eventually burn to DVD.
2. Capture of cable and DSS signal, for later viewing.
3. Watching live feed of cable/dss signal.

My first question would be are these cards generally able to recieve and display signal from DSS recievers? I know they probably can't decode, but how about s-video or regular AV output from the reciever to the video capture/tuner card?

Second, I want to stay as low as possible (under 100) in price, but I want it to be able to do a good job at archiving these old movies from VHS to digital format. I'm a total novice when it comes to this, but I want to get it done before the VHS tapes turn to dust :)

Would anyone have any recommendations for a brand and model that can do everything I need it to, and not break the bank? Any brands or models to stay away from? Any feedback, as always, is appreciated.

Thanks!

Probably not for under $100. That said you can *probably* find a solution costing considerably more. I don't know where that might be.

This is most likely possible although the quality varries from caputure card to capture card.

What you want to do here *probably* won't come cheap if you want decent quality.

If price is your bottom line, then the Hauppauge WinTV-dbx (WINTV401) Tuner with FM and Remote control - RETAIL may fit the bill. Be aware that it DOES NOT capture in DVD resolution, that is going to cost you more. I've never used this card and I've never known anyone who has, but what you are asking for in that price range is going to command very few options.

This site will help you figure out which cards to avoid and which ones to look for.

Good luck.

Is there any better "TiVo-like" software that can be used with the AIW 7500 card? I don't care much for the easylook interface and to playback recorded files you have to kick out of the PVR function and play the sctual file from your PC folder.
