Recommendations on making a desktop wireless?

JEDI

friend is moving to a new place.
there's already someone living there and he has wireless internet.

the router is on the 1st floor and his room is on the 2nd floor.
running 100'+ of cat6 wire to his desktop seems impractical.

his desktop is like 2 or 3 yrs old.

What inexpensive hardware do you recommend to make his desktop wireless?

A usb wireless controller would be the easiest.

A card based wireless controller with a decent antenna would likely work the best.

Yep. I have paid $5-10 for some adapters, though they were the micro kind with very poor signal reception. Handy for random jobs on devices without WiFi. If it is a daily use kind of thing, I'd get something like you listed.

Another option is a DDWRT compatible router using the wireless as a bridge. That can be a very nice setup if you get a good enough router and know what you are doing.

The second floor is awful far away from the router.

All depends really. I have my router in the basement (Internet connection must be there sadly) but my two primary WiFi devices are on the 2nd/main floor. Reception is not an issue for the most part.

I did temporarily move my router, which put an HVAC ducting system in between my router and end points. I was having serious issues despite the router being 'closer' to the device. I moved it back and hadn't had a problem in months.

WiFi should be fine in most scenarios so long as nothing major obstructs the signal.
