Recommendations on cell phone/service plan in NYC area

Well, I stalled as long as I could, but i guess the time has come to join the wireless "revolution" (whatever that means). Basically I'm asking for suggestions on both the service plan (applicable to people who live in the NYC area, since this is where I reside (Long Island to be specific)) and the phone. I read the point.com guides and went through some of the plans (Sprint PCS and AT&T Wireless). I'm leaning towards Sprint PCS deal (although I heard that their coverage sucks) with a Motorola StarTac or Talkabout cell phone, but obiously I'm open suggestions.

Their service is kind of spotty but has been improving over the last couple of months. I hear Sprint has the same problems. Verizon is another choice, they offer really good service in the NYC Metro area but their rates are really high.
