System has pci & pci-e 16 slots. 400w power supply. Core 2 Duo. Currently have a nividia 8400gs.

Ideas? I haven't been in the game for years & have no idea what's available or what is a fair price. Looking to spend less then $50. I've just been gaming on minimum settings, & want to at least make my experience more bearable.

Thank you. :)

With a core 2 duo & 400W power supply; an AMD 5750/6750 would be sufficient to bring your old system to life.

btw, is that a branded power supply or a generic one that came bundled with your PC?

8400GS is really slow (slower than a 5450 with its 80SPs, the 5770 have 800), any 5770/5750 1GB GDDR5 is a huge upgrade... also consider the 7750 GDDR5, around the same but with lower power usage

but Core 2 Duo is not a good description of your CPU, it could be a 1.8GHz with 2MB l2 cache or a 3.3GHz with 6MB l2 or something in between.

if you want something from Nvidia I wouldn't recommend going lower than the GTS 450/GTX 550 Ti/GTX 650

I paired a 6870 with a C2 Q6600 @ 3.4 for a while and it was not CPU limited. You can pick up a 6850 from ebay for $50-60 and pair it up with your C2D and blow that old 8400 away, especially if you are able to OC the C2D any.

3+ Ghz C2Q is a still a valid gaming CPU (single player). C2D's are not. 6850 would be bottlenecked unless Coquito has a 3+Ghz wolfdale C2D.

Also, 6850 would use more power and trying to OC CPU would further strain that 400W power supply.

Sorry for the late reply. PC was down installing some minor things. CPU is a 1.8 c2d. Power supply is actually a 500w FSP. I think it was $80ish & came recommended back in the day. A friend is giving me a 1gb gtx460 for a song. Hopefully it wont melt my pc.

Cheers.

At 1.8, no matter what you roll with you will be CPU limited. I would save up $200ish and surf the FS/FT forums for a new mobo-cpu-mem combo from someone looking to upgrade to Devils Canyon.
