Recommendations on a good scanner

I need a good scanner for about $400. What are your experiences with scanners, which ones do you think are really good, etc. A big benefit would be if it could do transparencies also.

The Epson 1240U Photo or the more expensive Epson 1640SU are great,also had very good reviews,anyway here`s the link for them

I was going to say the Epson 1240U Photo too. I think the Photo edition comes with the transparency adapter.

My Epson 1640SU blows away every consumer scanner I've used. The transparency/negative adapter and software give great control over the scanning resolution and color shift. It's a robust unit with micro-drive which gives me visibly greater sharpness. The copy and print utilities are robust and updates are available on the Epson web site. After years of UMAX, I'm convinced this is a superior scanner. The SCSI port provides very fast scanning times as well...I haven't used the USB connection, so can't comment there. I can enthusiastically recommend this scanner.
