Recommendations for Skiing/Gambling/Hotels/Resorts in Lake Tahoe?

Anyone have any good recommendations for places to stay in Lake Tahoe?

I plan on taking a trip for about 4 days with some friends to go skiing and also do some gambling.

What are some good hotels that are right on the slopes (or very near) and also have a decent casino in the hotel? I know Reno is pretty close by, but if possible, we all want to just stay in one location where we can ski and gamble and do everything there.

Thanks!

I've stayed at the Harrah's Lake Tahoe a few times. They have stay and ski packages, which include room, lift tickets, and a dining credit. The number of lift tickets and the amount of the dining credit vary depending on how many nights you stay. You can check out the packages on their website.

Each room has 2 full baths, which is convenient if you have more than 2 people in your group, and it's only 1 block from Heavenly Village.

Cool, thanks for the links. I'll definitely check it out.

Mont Bleu

That place is great, get the Spa Rooms. Nothing like a jacuzzi after a painful day of falling. Great to warm up after the snow! I will only stay here from now on.

Wow that place looks really nice.

Is it right on the slopes of a ski resort?

where is it? I think I remember walking from there to Harrahs for dinner so its close to there. Stayed there when I went to Heavenly. I don't know where exactly. Did not drive.

Stateline, NV (South Lake Tahoe) is where the biggest Tahoe casinos are (still not all that big). It's right close to Heavenly ski resort. You'll have to drive a while to get to any other ski resort. If you want to be super close to both casinos and a big ski mtn, the Stateline/south lake area is your best bet. Both Mont Bleu and Harrah's are there. Plenty other places to stay right there, depending on budget, etc.

I don't like Heavenly much and am not into gambling, so I stay at the north side of the lake. :p

this man knows his stuff.

There are basically 4 big casinos and they are all on the south side of the lake. Stateline, NV or South Lake Tahoe, CA. The biggies are Harvey's, Harrah's (basically the same thing but connected by an underground tunnel), Monte Blue and Horizon's. They are probably the best places for gambling and night action (possible Bill's casino as well, however Bill's is usually cheaper and not nearly as glamorous as the others). Note that none of them look extremly glam like Vegas.

I can't comment too much on the skiing other than Heavenly is close to the casinos, all the others require a drive. I hear Northstar on the north side is good, probably 45 minute drive.

If it is important to you to walk to the casinos and you have a tight budget there are some smaller hotels really close on the California side. Another option is to rent a condo/townhome for a few days. Usually you'll have a kitchen, loft, hot tub, etc. There are many for rent but are probably 1 mile away from the casinos so someone would drive or catch a taxi.

Personal feelings (caution: just feelings, so not fact based, and may not be true) about some random ski resorts at Tahoe that come to mind:
Heavenly (south lake): Would be nice if not for the crowds.
Kirkwood (south of the lake, on hwy 88): Nice, but all on its own, away from everything.
Homewood (west side of lake): Small, slow lifts, but uncrowded and nice views. Works for noodling around a day or two a season.
Alpine Meadows (north lake, hwy 89): Nice all around. They adjust prices so it's cheaper on non-peak days.
Squaw (north lake, hwy 89): Challenging runs. Something about it rubs me wrong.
Northstar (north lake, hwy 267): Flattish, so good skiiers/boarders won't be challenged by the runs. Good terrain park/superpipe. People who want steep runs go to other resorts so the steepest runs at northstar almost always have no lift lines.
Diamond Peak (incline village): similar to homewood, but more crowded.

All of the above plus more are drivable from South lake if you feel like it, but it can take about an hour or so.

Bumping thread w/ another question.

Where do you guys go to get package deals or discounts/savings on hotel/rentals/lift tickets, etc. Are there certain websites that can offer these kinds of things?

Thanks!

I learned how to ski (many years ago) at Squaw, so I've always liked it. However, I prefer Heavenly due to the proximity to Stateline. For skiing, I prefer the Nevada side of Heavenly to the CA side for some reason.

Is there a difference between the NV side and CA side? I mean it's just one big resort right?

I've been to Heavenly twice and one side of the mountain was definitely better than the other side. I forgot which one I was on though...
