I'm about 2 weeks from doing a system build (already have most of the parts except the mobo), and am looking for recommendations for an AM2 board that would be the most stable and reliable to consider. It will be running an X2 5200+ with 1GB of Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2 800 with a Western Digital RE-series SATA hard drive and a couple Plextor PATA Burners. It can be ATX or MicroATX. I'll be sticking with WindowsXP Pro 32bit.

It's for a system that will do basic ordinary stuff -- WWW, Office, Accounting software, photos, video. It does need Firewire. Doesn't need to overclock. And I don't have time to game anymore so onboard video is OK, or I'll put in a low-end PCI-E card. But I do daily accounting for 3 business (and inventory for 1) on my PC, so it's gotta be reliable.

I've always been partial to Abit, but they seem strangely absent from many current reviews. I'm about 3 years out of the tech loop, as I'm running an NF7-S (which has been the most reliable system I've ever built). Maybe they aren't as good as they used to be? I've been considering an AN-M2 but am wary of the new and unproven chipset.

I also hold Tyan in high regards for reliability, but they only have one AM2 board and it's over $200.

So if you've had bad experiences, let me know what to avoid. Or tell me what you'd recommend to look for.

A more competive comparison is the

MSI K9AGM2-FIH

And if you dont need HDMI but a real basic computer,

MSI K9AGM2-L

Both are of course MicroATX so you have the flexbility of making a real nice looking small form factor PC rather than the bulky PC you get from ATX casing.

Thanks for the info so far.

Since none of the boards mentioned yet have nvidia chipsets, may I assume AMD chipsets to be more preferred for stability?

Some stable motherboards with NVIDIA chipsets with IEEE 1394 and onboard video are:
  • MSI K9NBPM2-FID, Quadro NVS 210S, mATX
  • GIGABYTE GA-M61P-S3, GeForce 6100, ATX
  • ASUS M2NPV-VM, GeForce 6150, mATX
  • abit AN-M2HD, GeForce 7050PV, mATX (the chipset is new but has been proved stable)
