Recommendations for LCD Repair?

Ok, so I partially backed over my laptop this weekend. Everything works except that the LCD is cracked. So, obviously, it needs repair. Does anyone have any suggestions about getting it fixed? It is a Sony SR5k, and I quite like it. My questions are these:

(1) Does anyone have any suggestions of places to send it? (obviously, Sony itself is one option, but I wondered if there are others)

(2) Is it possible to change it myself? I am reasonably crafty, but I haven't really tinkered w/ laptops past memory & harddrives.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Matt.

Be prepared so spend serious $$$ as a cracked screen is not covered by ANY warranty. You best bet is to call sony and try to find a list of authorized sellers and contact a bunch of them to find the cheapest place.

It'll probably be cheaper to buy a new laptop than have the screen repaired, and might be a better use of your funds especially if the broken computer is more than 1 year old. For example, a 12.1" SVGA TFT display from IBM for a ThinkPad is about $1200.

The last time I contacted SONY about a laptop repair they wanted $700, money in front, just to troubleshoot the problem. Repairs were to be in addition. Needless to say, the thing is now in the landfill.

Sony does not like to share it's part numbers or it's parts distros.
Aside from paying sony a arm and a leg the best bet is a new laptop

Ouch...Im pretty sure your laptop has VGA out...maybe you can get a docking station + 17" monitor and use it as a dekstop.

unfortunately i've found that replacing the lcd costs close to what buying a laptop costs. if you can find someone who carries the piece, it'll cost you at least 600-1200 dollars. i've had a problem finding sony parts tho, so be prepared to hunt. you should be able to change it out yourself if you've done pc repair stuff, basically once you get the case around the lcd open there's USUALLY 4 screws and a couple of cables/ribbons to remove. if you don't have much experience inside pcs or even laptops, you might want to find someone who does, as the repair is pretty easy for an experienced tech. either way, good luck with it.

i guess the first thing i would do is a search on the net for sony parts, and go from there.
