Recommendations for LAN party games?

I'll be hosting a small LAN party with my friends during the holidays (about 10-12 of us) and I'm wondering if you guys could recommend good multiplayer games for this environment. I've been out of the game loop with university and all, so I'm up up to speed with the latest and greatest. Not particularly interested in FPS games as they're all very much alike, so I don't need to be updated on those.

Looking for something in either: strategy, simulation (I heard MechWarrior 4 was good?), racing, and some type of action game (non-FPS).

Thanks in advance!

Strategy - Total annihilation with the core contingency pack...
Simulation - Falcon 4.0, but it's got a pretty steep learning curve to say the least :), Mech 4 is good too..
Racing - Leadfoot
Action - Hmmm, not too sure about a non FPS action game but I'll say Operation Flashpoint.

For LAN action, I would definitely go with Serious Sam and Operation Flashpoint. Both have some great co-op stuff and are quite fun.

I'd say Tribes 2 :) It combines strategy AND FPS action. With the Warped mod strategy becomes really key and its so much fun :) But anyways, if your looking beyond that...you can always go for StarCraft or Total Annhilation. Age of Empires II is another fun game for LAN parties but that can get boring after a while. Mechwarrior 4 is a blast to play :) So that'd be a good one too

Cool guys, thanks for your input.

Still looking for more simulation type games though, I know most of them are kinda slow-paced and aren't LAN material, but I would imagine there are some good ones out there.

He said NOT FPS, but you people keep listing Counter-Strike. If you would play an HL mod (which you said you wouldn't), play Existence or
Day of Defeat. My recommendation (since not FPS) is Stronghold, a castle building "age of empires-like" game. Also, Command and Conquer
Red Alert or something like that. If you like racing, try any Need For Speed games.

Diablo 2 would be cool I think. It has an 8 player max but you guys could have 2 games going and level up real fast and then have some kickass dueling. I recommend NFS5 or Colin McRae Rally 2 (not sure if multiplayer is good on this though) for racing. Red Alert 2 is good too.

There is absolutely NO game better than Myth II at a LAN party. Myth II is not bad either. You wanna talk about laughing and having a great time, install Myth II at your party (there's a network only install for LAN parties). Fun FUN!

Yea...too bad. I loved that game too! Well, I'll suggest Age of Empires, but I think the max is 8 or something like that.

Hmm, still no one is suggesting any simulation type games? Do they all suck or something? :). I was hoping for some heart-pumping aerial space combat hehe.

Worms 2 doesn't work in Windows 2000. Neither does Worms Armageddon. They're supposed to release a patch for it someday, but that'll probably never happen.

Homeworld 1 or 2 are both good but watch out for sync errors with greater then 4-6 players
