I don't really have much to spend on a home theatre system, but I would like to put something in because I'm tired of listening to bland sound coming out of the TV.

I know there are many of you guys WAY into home theatre and all that stuff. I need a recommendation.

Let's say, what would you buy in the following prices ranges?

$1 - $500
$600 - $1000

I would be in need of a receiver & speakers. What's the best in these ranges? I'm also looking for something that will last over time, not just hot for a year or two. I will probably use it until the day it dies.

Thanks in advance.

For the best home theater sound, I would recommend using speakers. Speakers make any home theater sound 100% better.

That isn't a very big budget. I suggest starting out with 2 speakers and upgrade to more speakers as you save up more money.

Check this speaker comp out: Ascend

The 340se's get rave reviews from those who buy them and the 170se's aren't shabby on a tight budget. They also come with a 30 day return policy for 100% refund sans shipping. I say get a pair of 340s and spend the rest on a reciever. Then over time when money allows a 340center, pair(or two) of 170s, and a sub.

Also how large is the room?

I just bought an Onkyo tx-SR504 (wanted lots of component and digital audio switching) and am in the process of buying Athena AS-B1.2s and AS-C1.2 for the front, maybe another set of B1.2s for the rears (or some micra 6's), and either a AS-P6000 sub or Bic Acoustech H100 . Prices were 240 for the receiver, and 120 for the B1.2s, 140 for the C1.2, and I figure about $250 for the sub.

Should be a pretty good system once it's complete.... still using an old set of logitech Z-2200's plugged into the headphone jack for now.
