I have an external hard drive, on which I want to do incremental backups of my C: drive.

What are some well-known options for free incremental backup that software will work with Vista 64?

I was told that DriveImage XML will work with Vista x64. I haven't tried it though, so I don't know if you can just do incremental backups.

The backup software built in to Vista should work. Start Orb, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup. Does it not work?

I use Cobian backup to make backups of data files. It's free, very flexible, and doesn't use any propriety compression or anything.

However, I don't use it to backup the C: drive or windows folders, I'm not sure how well it works for that. I always figure that if my C: drive gets screwed up, I'm better off reinstalling Windows.

I didn't know Vista had an incremental backup, that's pretty cool. I'll probably use that, thanks :)

I cant see the point of backing up the C: O\S, in order to recover from a hard drive failure or corrupted system files, you will need an O\S installed to run the restore. If you need to backup the C:, I would instead use an imaging software with recovery CD......You can restore the O\S with a image stored on your external drive and update user data files through a weekly backup routine to the same external drive....

I don't think image backups can work incrementally, that seems against the idea of image backups. And plenty of people use incremental backups.

I can always reinstall the OS with my install DVD.

if you're doing a full image backup of the whole drive, it's likely you're using something that can restore WITHOUT the OS installed.

Acronis does incremental backups. Works fine and allows for restoring to several different time periods.

I could not get DriveImage XML to work on Vista 64. It produced an error that is documented at the developer's site...I could not get around it.

I like Vista's complete image backup (in Business and Ultimate versions)... being able to restore to a blank drive is nice. Vista's incremental backup works the same as XP and Server 2003's backup I believe. I see no need to use anything other software unless you have Vista Home.
