im looking for some ear plugs to use in the dorm room. most of the ones ive tried create a fairly unpleasant pressure sensation in the ear, making it hard to sleep or concentrate due to the constant discomfort.

do any of you guys use comfortable ear plugs?

I use the expanding foam ones when I shoot or when I just need to block out noise, and they're comfortable to me.

So it's Friday night in the dorm and you're looking for a way to block out all the sounds of partying and Orgyfest07' ??

Get the ones from CVS or Walgreens- they look like spongy X-mas trees, you screw it in your ears, they really block out the noise.

Do the foam ones block out all noise or just lower sound level? I'm thinking about getting some for a concert and I still want to be able to hear the music...just not at ear damaging levels.

I get stuck wearing earplugs every day and they all suck for my industry. Luckily I only have to wear the crappy earplugs in one ear since I have my radio earpiece in the other.

I really don't know what the dB reduction on them is. You can still hear people talking that are around you, but they have to speak up quite a bit for you to understand them. So you'd probably still be able to hear the concert.

..Norton Sonic II ear valves. They are active/passive and allow conversation thru but block loud noise.

Hearos foam plugs (the "rock" styles and "extreme" styles are best, but there isn't much difference). I played in an imposssibly loud rock band for years. We were all earplug addicts. our drummer had $150 custom-made earplugs, but for the most part, we found Hearos earplugs to be the best option for disposables. they are soft and block by far the most sound. much more comfortable and more effective than the generic cylinder foamies.

these are less effective and far less comfortable than any of the foam options. you can re-use them, but they get hard over time and stop working. they also have a tendancy to suddenly "open" on you when the final cup looses its seal, which is very annoying. and the little sticks on the ends would be terrible for sleeping on a pillow.

In my industry we commonly use in ear foam such as Howard Leight MAX & Hearos Ultimate Softness Series on a string or head band. The independent ones can be purchase in quantity of 200 for around $20-30 or 1000 in wall dispenser.

Independent foam or string works best, but can be annoying to use because it takes a bit of time to insert it into your ear. The head band setup is a great application for quick insert & removal however they don't fit as well nor cut out as much noise as the independent or string version.

They all do that. You just have to get used to it, the Triple Flange ones that are found with some IEMs were easier for me to adapt to than the Foam ones. I havent been able to buy the triple flange ones from altec lansing (i was supposed to receive a free pair) so I just deal with the noise :/

Depends on the design but most range from 15-33 dB reduction. There are over ear head phones that can reduce noise as much as 44-45 dB and can be use in conjunction with in ear expandable foams to further reduce noise.

The best of them reduce around 22 dB, and to me they are uncomfortable & tend to fall out much more easily.
