Does anyone have a recommendation for one that also provides the description text in addition to the code?

Otherwise, I will just get a cheap $20 one on Amazon that only gives the error code.

That's the setup I have, and I haven't had a single issue with it. But like phucheneh said, they seem to be hit and miss. Perhaps I've been very lucky.

That and a PC is the cheapest, most bulletproof setup.
Now, this looks like the way to go!

This is what I use
http://www.amazon.com/Autel-MaxiScan...obd-ii+scanner

It pulls codes, it clears codes.
Under 20 bucks.

Look up code on google and spend a bit in the forums to find out best way to address the cause. So far there hasn't been any decent reason to upgrade to another unit.

Get an ELM 327 and buy Torque Pro for your phone.
Shouldn't run more than $15 total and you do a hell of a lot with it.

I got the spendiest BT ScanTool, but that's because I wanted to use Torque and leave it plugged in all the time with minimal power drain. I've read some a lot of the other ones can have very sluggish polling rates. Some people suspect the DME in our car is a large culprit (probably), but I haven't noticed any serious problems so far.

i still have a scangauge II from the early 2000's that is chugging along. I remember paying $100 for it or something crazy. when it dies, i'd pick up one of those bluetooth ones for much cheaper

The extremely cheap BT adapters are very hit and miss.

mine was a hit. looks like this

and works well with the torque program. i use it as a quick scanner at my friends shop when we dont want to break out the big scan tool
