Recommendations for a UPS

Hello all,
Soooo...we're storming pretty bad here in Hawaii right now. On Friday, the power went out in my area; when I got home from work, my comp was dead. I've since determined that my processor is out, as well as my motherboard. I'm still not sure what the status of the other items in my box are, but we shall see. Thankfully, my monitors still work!

I just now placed an order for a new setup (Athlon 64 +3200, some sort of MSI board that's red in color, and a gig of Corsair TWINX ram). This turned out to be pretty pricey for me, and since I now live in fear of the god of electricity, I feel I need something more adequate than a surge protector to protect my investment.

I actually have two questions, but the main one is: can anyone recommend a good/reliable battery backup thing that I could use? I know of the APC products, but I never really knew how well they performed. Anyone care to tell me any stories that would convince me of getting any model of these UPS things?

Second question: After this unfortunate event, should I replace my power supply? I checked the power supply in a friend's machine, and it seemed to have survived the whole "fry my computer" thing. However, someone had warned me that even though it had survived the blackout, the internal components of the power supply could be slightly damaged now. I don't want to risk putting this nice new setup of mine on a faulty device; can anyone validate these claims?

Thanks in advance! 😀

APC 500va. I use 3 to protect 1 workstation and 2 servers w/cable modem & router. They can't be beat. If I'm not mistaken, APC offers a power waranty to all connected equipment up to ? $xx,000. I like being protected and being able to save my stuff before I loose hrs on a project.

I use an APC Back-UPS XS 1000 for my main machine. I believe the sell for $150 but I got this one for like $130 at staples with some coupon.

While a UPS does have surge protection, it isn't rated for nearly as much as a good Belkin surge protector. The APC 500VA is a great UPS for a home office, but I wouldn't depend on it for protection of my equipment.

hmmm...but the surge protector I was on was a Belkin surge protector...:/
Hence, my dire need for a battery backup 😉

I know APC offers $XX,XXX amount of coverage for their products; does Belkin have the same offer?

You should contact Belkin about the equipment you lost, because they do offer a warranty on connected equipment. For the Surgemaster Gold they offer unlimited connected equipment coverage.

I lost a machine that was plugged into a Belkin power strip. It really wasn't it's fault, just had periodic flickering of power due to some local construction. Power supply blew and took the motherboard, cpu, and CD burner with it. I will probably be getting a couple of 500VA's
