Recommendations for a TV

Looking for some recommendations on TV's with better standard def performance. Unfortunately, in Canada, we've got limited OTA programming on HD, so a majority of the TV we watch here is still standard def. It's mostly for my parents who watch their Chinese TV channels (which I don't see going high def any time soon).

Looking for a decent RPTV or LCD (at least 46" and up) that does well with SD content. We'll occasionally watch DVD's or some OTA HD (when there's a Canucks game on HD) but other than that, largely just SD.

Using a Toshiba 52HM84 right now, but planning to get rid of that because of the nightmare of a time I've been having with the bulbs burning out. (I've gone through 2 bulbs in the last 8 months, and apparently Toshiba doesn't give a sh!t and doesn't see that as an issue).

I'd like to have some versatility for the future (i.e. at least a HDMI port, and ideally 1080p). but williing to forgo 1080p for better SD performance.

Any recommendations?

Pioneer or Pioneer Elite. If you can afford it, Fujitsu.

Another option would be to get any TV of your pleasing (if LCD, I'd suggest a Sony or Samsung), and grab an external video processor, like the iScan.

What's your price range?

Ah, good point. Price range is probably under $2k ideally. The iScan looks interesting, but seems really pricey. Seems to be overkill for regular TV viewing. 😀

I guess I should revise my definition of "best". 🙂 What I'm looking for is just something that's sharper than the plain feed I get from my cable company. It's pretty grainy/fuzzy and was hoping some TV's would do some post-processing to it (is that what the Farjouda chip does?) and make it look slightly better so it doesn't look like crap. 😀

I want to do it at the lowest possible price of course. 🙂 $2k and below is my ideal price point (and I'm Canada too if that makes things worse).

It's kind of hard to find any articles about SD performance since every review focuses on HD performance and says little to nothing about SD. Seeing that almost everyone still watches SD at some point in time, you'd think it's something worth mentioning.

I am really happy with the SD quality from my Philips 47in 1080p from Costco (Model 7422). I had the Vizio previously, and never liked the SD on that, but the Philips does a much better job. At 1699 from costco (with costco return policy/warranty) its a great deal.

1080p, 2 HDMI ports, pretty decent SD quality, and fantastic HD quality for the price. The Pioneer 5080, which is 720p, can be found from places like Invision Displays (AVS Forum sponsor, highly recommended), for around $2500.

ditto on invision.....personally, I went with the pioneer 5080 and we throughly enjoy it.
