Recommendations for a PC game controller? Looking at nVidia Shield

I want to purchase a good, responsive -- preferably reliably wireless -- game controller for my sig-rig.

Previously, in getting rid of bloat in my system, I'd shut off "NVStreamSvc" -- which gets installed with drivers for my GTX 780 card. I think I can reactivate the service, since I killed it in either msconfig or the advanced Services dialog.

Here's the link to the NVidia game controller:

This NVidia Shield doesn't use any wireless dongle for the PC, and apparently is instead a network device on the wireless part of your LAN. My old CISCO E2000 router isn't the fastest gigabit/wireless around, but my laptop PC gets connection speeds of around 117 Mbps with 2400-band Wireless N. The CISCO is upstairs, in an opposite corner of the house, and when I walk out the patio on that side of the house with the laptop, my wireless connection speed shoots up to 144.

With the USB charging accessory/wire, I would be able to play through the wired connection, as well.

It's pricey, and I'm still looking at other offerings, but just looking at the EGG, there aren't that many other than the wired controllers. There's a Microsoft "XBOX 360" PC gamepad -- wireless -- requiring AA batteries, for $10 less than the NVidia. The Logitech 710, etc.

Any thought are enthusiastically welcome before I punch "Add to Cart" and "Checkout" buttons. Not a REAL big hurry, either, but something I'd like to settle in the next four days.

Especially -- if you HAVE the Shield controller, any observations would be helpful.

In my opinion, the build quality of the Shield controller is nowhere near the 360 controller. It's Nvidia's first draft controller and it shows.

I'm cautious about wireless "anything." I'd had the frustrations of AA-battery-powered wireless devices, the receivers and so on -- or so I had ten years ago.

The Wi-Fi in the house is stellar. I always make sure things work. My brother upstairs is sold on wireless controllers for his Play-Stations. they are all rechargeable. They apparently do not work with a PC, though.

For myself, I think I'm going to try a wired controller initially -- probably this one:

Does the Shield controller even work without a Shield tablet?

I'd just go with a wireless 360 controller.

Consoles have had wireless controllers by default for 2 generations now (nearly a decade) and they work pretty much flawlessly. I don't think that you'll find many people complaining about their 360, PS3, PS4, etc. controllers losing sync with the console. On the PC side of things the issue was always more of shoddy driver support than anything else.

I have a wired 360 controller hooked to my PC (cause I just happened to have one laying around), and it works perfectly fine. Game support is great, with most console ports simply autodetecting it and flipping their UI and prompts into 360 mode. I've also used the wireless 360 controller on PC and it works equally well. I couldn't really tell a difference other than the lack of wire and that the wireless version is slightly heavier due to having batteries.
