recommendations for a new system?

hi,

I think it's finally time to upgrade, and I'm looking to buy a new computer. Only this time i figure it'd be better to buy parts and piece it together myself. I have no idea what to look for though. That's why I came here.

I'm going to be using it primarily for audio-video stuff (encoding svcds/divx, video editing, etc.), as well as the occasional game.

My price range is ~ $1000.00

i figure i could salvage some of my current system. here's what i have now (don't laugh):

celeron 400 MHz
64MB 100MHz RAM
128 100MHz RAM
Quantum Gireball CR 6.5 GB
Maxtor 7200rpm 60GB
3D RAGE PRO AGP 2X
Mitsumi CR-4804TE 4x4x24
Some CD Drive - 32x
1.44" floppy drive
scanner - Snapscan e20
ordinary keyboard
ordinary mouse
Rockwell Riptide combo card (supports V.90 K56 Flex protocols)
10/100 Ethernet Card
Alcatel dsl modem
Rockwell RipTide combo card
HP/Polk Audio stereo speakers
15" monitor
some crap motherboard

here's a link for it in case you're interested: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph05067.html
it's that system + 128MB 10MHz RAM + Mitsumi CR-4804TE 4x4x24 + Maxtor 60 GB 7200 rpm + 10/100 ethernet + scanner.

so any suggestions?

i'm thinking you can reuse that 60gb hd, the cdrom drive, floppu, NIC, and modems. for a 1000, you can get a pretty nice system....turn on your PM's.

<< not sure about the cdrom drive. i'm thinking i'll need a dvd drive. >>

You can get a good DVD drive for $40. Go for it.

i'm thinking i'll need:

a new tower (mid or full).
a motherboard - no idea what to get
the AMD 1.4 GHz, or should i go for the new xp?
the GeForce 3, or should i go for the new Radeon 8500?
Creative Lab Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 PCI Sound Card
512 MB PC2100 DDR Ram
Pioneer 16X DVD Model 106S, 40x CD-ROM
speakers

anything else?
