Recommendations for a new monitor

I have a fairly new machine ~ 1 yr old, with an AMD 1.4 ghz Athlon, and a Visiontek GeForce 3 video card in it. My monitor (approximately 6 years old) is on the fritz with lines running all through it and I am in the market for a new monitor. LCD screen would be great, but I heard that some pixels come burnt, and the resolution is not that great. Can anyone make any recommendations?

Thanks,

Joe

I would like to get a good monitor and would really like an LCD, but do not want to spend more than... who knows what. I am new to the LCD idea and I'm looking for advice. Are there any reasons why I shouldnt get an LCD? Any models to stay away from or lead towards? I hear that CRT monitors get better resolution for gaming these days and are coming down in price. if I'm going with CRT, im looking for a big one to enjoy gameplay - probably 19"-21". Any suggestions?

UPDATE: I am upgrading my CPU to an AMD Athlon 1.4ghz t-bird to an Athlon XP 2200+ Thoroughbred with my Epox 8K7A+ with Raid. I am also looking to upgrade my video card to make use of the DVI feature of all these new LCD monitors (if I get one). I currently have a Visiontek GeForce 3. I've heard many conflicting opinions about ATI vs. NVidia. Any suggestions?

Thanks very much!

Well it seems like you really have your heart set on an LCD monitor.

I've been doing a bit of research about this lately, I've been pretty hard pressed coming up with many reviews of different monitors but there are some LCD monitor reviews here on anandtech and also i noticed some on tomshardware.

As far as what constitutes a good monitor if your a gamer which I assume you are, it seems that response time is virtually the most important factor 25ms or less, however, the only monitors which have the 16ms response times are 17inch or smaller. There is currently no manufacturer making 19inch matrices with 16ms response times.
Also a high contrast eg 500:1 is highly desirable, as well as good brightness 250ccd or better, and personally I like to see good horizontal and vertical refresh rate as well as decent overall video bandwidth.

However, I viewed an Acer AL922 today and I thought it was pretty damn good, even in games with a 25ms response time I only noticed tearing if I threw the mouse back and forth like shaking my head crazily other wise it looked extremely good. DVD's looked incredible, as did txt, this was all through the DVI connection.

The company that makes the 16ms matrices is a combination company of Acer and Fujitsu I think it was creating AU Optronics.

Lots of ppl say the Dell 1800FP is good and the Hitachi CML174 is a 16ms response time one as well as Benq and Planar have some 17inch 16ms response time monitors.

Go and check some out is the best bet. But 19inch LCD's are going to be pricier.
