recommendations for a good ftp box?

they have seedboxes for torrenting, where is a good place to get an ftp box?

most of the free file sharing websites offer mediocre download speeds, and don't offer file resume

most of the web hosts don't look kindly at sharing large files via ftp, as they expect you to just use your server for http and related docs

so i need a solution specifically catered to large, high speed file transfers over ftp

i want this for business use, it will only be used for transferring large business-related files (hopefully at high speeds) to select employees and select customers (not looking to start a movie/software/file sharing ftp haha). most of these large files will probably consist of graphics files (promotional materials for print and web advertising)

Probably a service along the lines of ShareFile would fit your needs.

a cool solution, but as expected of a Citrix product, it is far too expensive and feature-rich for my needs

i don't need anything more complex than ftp (this is not super sensitive data), and i certainly want something cheaper ($10/month - $20/month maybe?) and without all of these restrictions on users and bandwidth (obviously there would be some restriction on bandwidth but 5GB for $30? hahaha)

Where else have you looked ..I've got "unlimited download" through my host
but never really tested it to the max.

You can give then a 30-day try for free at site5.com

PS basic $4.95 - but I'm sure there are a lot of providers with the same offer

most of these "unlimited" download hosting services come with many caveats.

first of all, it is rarely truly unlimited. once you hit a certain usage, they will get mad at you and shut you down or charge you.

there are often other restrictions. for example, with my namecheap hosting, i can store large files on the server, but they must be accessible via http. in other words, i must be using the box as a website, and not as a file server. now, my files are not top secret, but i don't want they linked from my website either.

A lot of home NAS boxes have FTP services. Or you could build a FreeNAS box to do the same thing. Or even add the functionality to an existing HTPC or somesuch.

Firewall configuration and DNS management is your problem though, since your ISP probably is giving you a dynamic IP. I used to use no-ip.org.

nope. my problem with that option is bandwidth. most home and even business class ISPs offer very poor upload speeds. and i don't want to be clogging my work connection by maxing out my upload pipe.

there is a reason why i specifically want an offsite hosted ftp service ...
