Recommendations for a digital postage or kitchen scale.

I'm wanting to purchase a digital scale. I'll be using it to measure small hobby parts, standard envelopes, small packages and ingredients.

I don't know much about digital scales but I would like it accurate down to a gram if possible. I want it to weigh as much as possible without sacrificing accuracy. If it uses AA, AAA or and AC adapter that would be a plus. If it can be calibrated that also would be a plus. I'm on a budget so I'm looking for the best bang for the buck scale. If I have to through a number out let's say $20. Any recommendations or experiences will be appreciated.

AFAIK, Stamps.com still offers a "free" 5 lb. USB postage scale along with their trial membership. They only charge the shipping fee, plus you get $5.00 in free printable postage stamps.
Note: continuing past the 30 day free trial may not be such a good deal, however. The scale only works when connected to a PC. There's a downloadable USB device driver, so you can use it without having to use their software. The scale is not "calibrate-able", but Amazon offers inexpensive 500 gram calibration weights. It's usually accurate to within about 1 ounce. Example: if an item weighs 3 lb. 4 oz., the scale may say it only weighs 3 lb. 3 oz.

I would try amazon or harbor freight for a scale in that price range. I have the 11lb max scale from harbor freight which works well and can run off of AA batteries or the included AC adapter. The only thing i don't about it is that it only goes down to weighing grams and not 10ths of grams, so you are left guessing at at how much over or under 1 gram you are. That scale is currently 19.99, but for another 10 you can get an additional smaller scale for more accurate measurements.

I have one from Amazon (I think) - 11 pound maximum. I took it to school the other day because our digital balances are all max 400 grams. I needed to get an accurate mass of a few things in physics class. Just to check its accuracy, I put a 1kg mass on it. "1000 grams" - I was amazed at the precision.

(I think it was about $10-12)

I used this one many, many times back when I was shipping lots of orders from my house. Pretty accurate... goes down to the .2oz level for envelopes and goes as high as 75lbs (I weighed luggage on it before too - it was really close to what the airport scale was, obviously I couldn't fit it on there perfectly due to the size).

I bought a cheap Chinese scale from ebay for $7. Uses a AAA battery that lasts forever.

If you want something that's "legal for trade" you'll be paying $600.

Thank you all for your suggestions! Most of those scales look great. I'll take a close look at the reviews on each scale so I can get one ordered.

Thanks again 🙂

Thanks again everyone. I went with the Ozeri Pro and grabbed it off of Newegg for $16. I would have bought the Ozeri Pro II because it has a 40% coupon at Amazon but I didn't want to spend $35 to get free shipping. I really wanted the myweigh kd8000 but I just couldn't justify the price for my needs.

Me too - bought a cheap digital one on ebay for under 10 bucks. Weighs to a tenth of a gram. Had it 5 years, works great.

this is what i use for my packages. i use the ozeri listed above for food. takes less space in my tiny kitchen. can recommend both.

I agree, I have a food scale somewhere. They are a better fit for kitchen needs definitely.

I like the fact that the Weighmax can do very small things as well as almost anything I would ship.

I have even used it to weigh my animals.

I recently got that one in silver. My main requirement was regular AA or AAA batteries -- one I got uses AAA. Effing hate button batteries. Accuracy is reasonable for the price. I do miss those x.xxx gram scales I used back in school. They were a couple hundred backs a pop, apparently.

If you need accuracy better than +/- 1 gram, you ain't weighing food or packages.

Actually I have one good to 0.01g. The reason is that I have some commercial formulas for bread which require long fermentation and very little yeast. For a small batch it's sometimes just a few tenths of a gram of yeast and when trying something new it seems best to work from a known baseline. I don't use it often though.
