Just bought a Pioneer 4270 for $1350 shipped.
Linky

42", 720P. The stand is about 11" thick - the screen itself is thinner. The sofa is 10' away and it feels right, dunno about trying to view from 15' away though. According to AVS forum, it has QAM. Viewing angles are great. I've watched movies and sports and haven't noticed any lag. It doesn't automatically scale for non HD channels.

The 50" plasmas are coming down in price. Unfortunately the deal is already dead, but this 50" Panasonic plasma was $1500 shipped a few hours ago. If you could find a deal like that again, then that would be the best bet.

At 15 feet away, a 42" is going to look REALLY small. Actually, at any further than 8-9 feet, a 42" is probably too small. I sit at 11 feet away and will be getting a 50" in the near future.

I actually ordered that yesterday for $1500 shipped, no taxes from outpost. I tried to convince him to go with the 46" 1080P Samsung that was several hundred more, but he refused to purchase anything smaller than a 50" (while maintaining his budget) and he is a HUGE Panasonic fan (that is practically the only electronics brand that he buys, down to the electric razors). Pulled the trigger that TV you linked when I saw it on fatwallet.

He currently watches a 32" TV that is about 15 years old from about 15' away.

Anyone know of a good upscaling standard (nonHD) dvd player that plays Divx and Mpegs that would send it up to 720P for his new plasma?
