Question Recommendation on upgrading 2.5 year old CPU and Video card

Assume it is built for gaming.

I build my main computer every couple years, usually buy all parts from newegg.

In 2016 I built one with
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz $340
Video card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW GAMING ACX 3.0, 08G-P4-6286-KR, 8GB GDDR5X $670
The rest were standard stuffs

Now i have an itch to build another one. To my surprise, the market price for the 1080 hasn't dropped -- my previous cards usually dropped to 25% after two years.
What will be reasonable upgrades to my CPU and video card, price and performance wise?
Any recommendation on the motherboard?

Thank you!

In my opinion, no (unless you do things with your PC where a CPU like the Ryzen 2700x or 9900k would help).
The newest Intel CPUs really are just Skylake+++ CPUs with more cores (although the 9th gen ones outside of the 9900k have dropped Hyper-threading).

If you still have the itch, really the only Intel CPUs that you really should look at for a good performance boost are the i7-9700k (8 core, no Hyper-threading) or the i7-9900k (8 cores with Hyper-threading).

For an AMD build the only CPU that would make sense would be the 2700X (which is slower at IPC, but makes up for it with more cores and mult-threading). Things like gaming usually are a little slower (mostly at 1080P or lower resolutions), but excel at things that take advantage of all those cores (like video editing, etc.). For GPUs, you would need to buy a RTX 2080ti ($1000k+) or a RTX 2080 ($700+). Moving to a GPU like the RTX 2080 would be a relatively small performance increase compared to previous gen performance jumps, and you won't be able to sell that GTX 1080 for as much as you have it priced at in your OP. With cards like the RTX 2060 for $350, that's the neighborhood you would likely be looking at.

Personally, I would wait to see what the next Ryzen CPUs bring soon (middle of this year). Intel's new offerings just aren't compelling enough (to me) to be worth the upgrade, and I still have a 6700k. But I understand the "upgrade itch" all to well, so all of this should point you in the right direction to look at some CPU reviews of the 2700x, 9700k, and 9900k (which usually have a 7700k listed for comparison purposes, and is very close to a 6700k). There's not much else you could go with that would provide that much of a bump (depending on PC use, of course).

No its not reasonable, I agree entirely with UsandThem. With that being said, is a gearhead's hotrod ever fast enough? this is why we are on Anandtech commenting about such things right? we are enthusiasts that appreciate these types of things.

If you have the money, and are bored with your current setup, you will be happier just to go ahead and give in to temptation. But I am a bad influence, I have upgraded from (4790K to 7700K to 8700K to 9900K) and from (GTX 970 to GTX 970 SLI to GTX 1070 to GTX 1080 to GTX 1080Ti to GTX 2080Ti) its a ton of fun, plus you can either sell your old stuff or re purpose it.

Thank you both for the help. Finally decide to upgrade to a I7-9700K and RTX 2080. Last week I had to spend a night in ER with a family member and it was an eye opening experience. Life is short. Treat yourself well 🙂
