Recommendation on DVD-ROM

i just got a little money for christams 😀 and i'm thinking of getting a DVD for my system (sad thing is, right now it only has a Cdrom). any suggestions, recommendations, experencies would be very helpful 🙂

It all depends on what's most important to you... a lot of people fancy slot-loaders, which makes the Pioneer 106S a popular choice($75, Newegg). If the blend of great speed and great price appeals to you, look at the x16 Lite-On ($58, Newegg). Toshiba makes a remarkably quiet, reliable, and able-to-read almost any media you put into it DVD drive ($65, Newegg). Those would be my top three choices 🙂

I agree with Glenn on those choices. However, I consider the Lite-On just as good as the Toshiba drive, especially if DAE speed is important for you. That damned slot load looks so nifty though.

thanks, but what do you mean by able to read almost any media that is put into it? do you mean DvdRW disks and stuff like that?

well, that too, but i'm talking more along the lines of being able to read stuff like low-quality/bulk cd-r's and scratched discs, that would give other drives a serious case of the fits. Some drives are more forgiving of really cheap, crappy media than others.... quite a few drives out there need high-quality media to be happy and read well. The Toshiba will read and play damn near anything you can throw at it.

whenever i wonder about which drive i want, i head over to the storagereview.com leaderboard for ATAPI the lite-on LTD-163 .. i would purchase .. good luck ..

i would really like the slot loading stuff, BUT the toshiba is faster, reportedly quiter, and you guys say it will read scratched up disks, plus i can easily get a black faceplate for it
