Recommendation on bed sheets

I'm in the new market for new bed sheets as I finally splurged and got a pillow-top mattress, and I've noticed there is quite the selection out there...any recommendations on good quality, soft and (hopefully) inexpensive sheets? Should I stay away from the myriad of brandless, Egyptian cotton sheets on ebay?

Go to Bed Bath and Beyond or a department store. They'll have little pieces of cloth that you can feel.

I generally shop this discount stores like Ross & TJ Maxx for bedsheets. Basically anything 100% cotton with a threadcount greater than 300 will be pretty good. I got some 600 threadcount sheets at one of those stores before and they are really comfy.

unless it's a reputable seller, I'd avoid scambay...

Too many other reputable places to buy.

I can't stand flannel sheets anytime of the year.

I want 100% cotton...preferably 600+ thread count...and with a sateen finish.

Check Overstock.com. They sometimes have really good deals. I got some very nice 1200ct sheets there at like 80% off retail (or so they claim).

overstock is a good source...look at the reviews carefully. Not all deals are real deals.

I snagged a nice set for under $20 for my Queen sized bed. Wish I bought more than one set as they never got them back in stock and they were better than the set I had paid about $100 for.

Just be careful when you see a deal. The labels on sheets are probably less reliable than a "crazy" used car salesman.

Two tricks are very common.
1) If you look closely you'll see text like this:
as soft as 100% Egyption cotton.
Notice that little text that says "as soft as". It means the rest of the label is a complete fabrication. The bad pun was intended.

2) Suppose a material was made with 200 thread count fabric. But suppose those threads are each made from 4 pieces. Is it 200 thread count or 800 thread count? Honest brands go with the 200 thread count, which is about the bare minimum that anyone would want. But most cheap brands will call that same material 800 thread count. Be very suspicious of anything over 600 thread count as it very likely is a lie. And anyways, you probably won't like anything that is truely much over 600 thread count as that starts feeling like a stiff board instead of a sheet.

TJ Maxx, tuesday Morning etc are hit or miss, get 400+ thread count and feel them yourself, I've gotten a few sets from Costco (600tc ~$60 for queen) and they have actually out lasted the discount outlet ones, and are usually the same price, or a bit more.

I'd avoid Bed, Bath, and Beyond unless you've got a stack of 20% off coupons or stumble on a good clearance deal... they're way overpriced imo.

Search my post history and you'll find my long thread as a response to someone else.

Now if you are looking for some of the premium quality sheets, these are the list to choose from brand wise.

Sferra
Schlossberg
Christian Fischbacher
Yves Delorme
Pratesi
Frette
Slabbinck
Signoria di Firenze

Of course with any of those, I think the cheapest is the hotel queen set from Pratesi for about $300. It's also not really a good set from them, but the rest of the stuff is outstanding! Of course some of those brands have $1000+ sets of linen so you need buckaroos galore to buy them.

Now, if you are looking for excellent quality for a good price, I can not recommend enough Wamsutta Dream Zone collection. They have them at Bed Bath and Beyond for $189 for a king set. About the lowest price point for what I consider "quality" sheets. Use a 20% coupon and get the price down to $151 before taxes.

Here's a link to them.

I use these myself. I tried some other department store brands and have several sets like Vera Wang and even some sets off Smart Bargains. They all PALE in comparison to the quality of the higher end sets I have listed in this thread.

yup. You can find the exact same brands at Marshalls/TJ Maxx/Stein Mart/ et al for ~30-5-% less.
