Recommendation of a 21"+ Monitor

When buying one of these large monitors (for gaming) what qualities should one look for. teh basic ones would be

atleast able to do 1600*1200@85mhz
atmost .25dp

what else? is there a partcular kind of tude thats good for gaming? what is horizontal vs vertical dp? there also this thing called filteration or some thing.

pls help as this is a MAJOR invetment for me. (dont worry about my system specs as they would shortly be moving up to p3-700, GTS 64DDR etc)

LXi pretty much gave two great recommendations. Sony 21" are a hell of a lot of money so I'm not sure if you would be interested in one of those.

A tube that is best for gaming is a Aperture Grille, or Trinitron (same thing). Sony makes a Trinitron tube and so does Mitsubishi. The Samsung 1200NF uses the Mitsubihishi DiamondTron tube while the KDS uses the Sony FD Trinitron tube. From what I have heard and seen, they are both very good tubes and you should be satisfied with either one.

Horizontal pitches are listed because they are lower but you will see a asterisk by them saying that it is the horizontal. A horizontal dot pitch of .20mm is very good. A grille pitch of .24-.25mm is good, like the monitors LXi has listed.

I don't know what ya mean about some filterating thing.

Trinitron tubes are CRTs with an aperture grille that are manufactured by Sony. FD Trinitron are flat-screen tubes.

If your going to use this monitor mostly for gaming, I would suggest that you consider buying a high quality 19 inch vs a cheaper (or expensive) 21 inch. I have found that after the first week or two of use, I no longer percieve my 21 inch monitor as being any larger than my old 17 inch. If I could do it over again, I would save myself some money and just stick with a 19 inch. If you happen to use a lot of other programs that do need a bigger desktop, then it might be worth it. But for just games I think your better off with a 19 incher.

If you think Samsung and KDS are cheap in quality and performance, you're obviously wrong.

Nokia Multigraph 445Xpro

anyone have any views on this monitor?

Also anyone knows of a website that does monitor reviews regularly (unlike anandtech, where i could find only review of 2 ilyama monitors)

I have heard quite a few of bad things about Nokia monitors. Nothing specific about the problems though I think the image quality is pretty bad.

I couldn't tell you whether it is actually worth it to get a 21" for gaming. I don't really find my 19" that big anymore. Noticeably bigger than my 15" of course, but I don't have a 17" to compared it to.

I have to agree with LXi. While the KDS and Samsung 21" are realatively cheap in price, they are great monitors that are, in my opinion, are damn near the quality of a Sony or Mitsubishi.

eagle_2:

They aren't near the quality of Sony and Mitsubishi monitors; in fact, in many respects they surpass the quality and performance/price ratio of Sony and Mitsubishi monitors.

KDS AV-21TF and Samsung 1200NF are your top two choices right now.

Hitachi has a new 21" display, the 814. I know nothing about it really and reviews are scarce (read that "zippo&quot😉. My I love my current 19" Hitachi and may look to the 814 if reviews are good.

BTW, I disagree about going with a 19" instead. 21" gives you enough real estate to move to a 1600x1200 desktop. That's really not plausible with your 19" tube unless you really get intimate with it.

"KDS AV-21TF and Samsung 1200NF are your top two choices right now. "

Any price for these guys? any place u can get these refurbs/used?

Akaz

PS thanx for the input guys, really appreciate it.

***Edit*** also if the Nokia Monitor that i mentioned is not that good then y is it so dang expensive?

***Edit2*** can one tell a difference b/w 85Mhz and 105Mhz refersh rate?

***Edit3*** any one got any of these big monitors for sale?

Akaz:

I think the KDS AV-21TF is selling for roughly $730 at Onvia.com with free shipping. Be warned, however, that the price has been jumping up and down recently, so if you see it at above $730 maybe wait a few days or a week and see if it's coming down or not.

The Samsung 1200NF is brand spankin' new. It should be available soon, but probably not for another week or two before you start seeing it at Onvia.com

I checked Onvia and its still at $730, very good deal. Get it while supplies last and while they keep it at $730.

JellyBaby: The 814 came out long time ago. In fact, they came out with 811, 812, 813 and 814. Now they dropped 812 and 814 and changed the line up to 811+, 813+ and 815+. So the new monitor would be the 815+, not much of a breakthrough though, still the good ol conventional shadow mask.

any chance of getting that KDS used/refurb? 🙂

***Edit*** darn 🙁 KDS is not available at canadian onvia 🙁

21" monitors are good for gaming, but they are GREAT for having many windows open when writing code. You can view alot more in an editor with the large screen, or have four of them open, one in each corner. As for a recommendation, I'd look into the Sony G500, it's usually just a bit over $1K.

Well First up, my budget is around 500USD, so buying new is outta of the question. so thats y i wanna refurb/used.

That tight a budger also means any respectable sony model is out. these recommneded KDS look good so if i can get me hands on a 1 year old KDS, it should fit in my budget. (Samsung 1200 being a brand new model is outta of the quesstion)

i dont know about the prices of Ilyama monitors so could any one tell me about those?

Akaz

$500 US for a 21"? You wouldn't get it for that unless it is refurbished like you said. I'm not sure of the price of an Iiyama 21" but it would be more than a KDS or Samsung. Because of your $500 budget, I would now have to say that I would be looking into a 19".

Exactly eagle__2, instead of looking for cheap or refurb or second hand 21", you'd much better off with a top notch new 19" instead. And forget Iiyama, people rave about it for I dont know whatever reason, but they're way overpriced and dont seem to be any better than Samsung and KDS.

For $500, I highly recommend these models:

Samsung SyncMaster 900NF -$440
KDS Avitron AV-195TF -$460

You guessed it, they're just the1 19" equivalent of the 21" ones I recommended earlier.

How are the digial controls on that Samsung Syncmasters? The screenshots at the web sight don't really show them. Are they more similar to Hitachi's layout or, say, Viewsonic's quirky menu system?

Its kinda hard to describe, but it's like a little tray, when you push it, the tray comes out in a 45 degree angle. Look at this pic for a better idea of what it looks like.
