I'm moving to Saskatchewan for a work contract (several months possibly to the spring of 2012) this week, and will need a laptop for Skype to communicate with the family. I will also need some work clothing.

Which laptop to get?
AMD or Intel (i3, i5, or i7)

Which wookboots to complement my Viberg boots?

Which jacket to complement my Dakota HYPER-DRI® HD2 Ripstop Soft Shell?

I'm thinking of getting the bellow since I already have 2 12V lithium Milwaukee batteries and charger.

Milwaukee 2330-L M12 12-Volt Large Heated Jacket

And a pair of insulated pants.

In the upcoming winter?
Waterproof, definitely. Even uninsulated you can keep warm with dry feet.

What's your price range on the laptop? What do you need to do with it besides Skype? Is battery life a huge issue or will you always be near a wall socket? I'll let someone else take the clothing recommendations.

Battery life isn't a concern, and it is only be use for Skype & NEFing in AT forums.

I think the price difference between i3/i5 and even i7 isn't that big anymore. My i5 for my desktop was pretty new still when I got it 2 years ago. Got my i3 laptop a year ago, and it was one of the cheapest models available.

Get a big hard drive... Saskatoon is the capital, and it only has a population of 200k (holy shit, I thought it was at least a million). Closest bigger town (Edmonton and Calgary) are over 100Km west. They got Potash, yay?

Saskatchewan = flat land (IIRC) and beaucoup snow. Never been there, but that's prairie country.

Cheapest Laptop that do Skype nicely. It will be a one use laptop and I will throw it out once I'm back in Victoria. I purchased a $400 netbook a few months back for traveling to Indonesia, and promptly returned it to buy a laptop because it was way too slow even for surfing the net.

Regina gas plant is where I'm going.

Remember during the winter Saskatchewan averages -10 to -15C and can dip down to -40C.

and the blizzards can get pretty wicked too, cant even see 10-15 feet in any direction. Makes going from moosejaw to regina pretty fun tho :p (or scary!)

You will be in/near the city at least.

I dealt with that in Minnesota a couple times. Not fun. And I did it with regular cheap kids boots.
My feet were not the major concern. It was my boogers freezing up and blocking the air.

A heated jacket sounds good but, isn't. People who've grown up in cold country know, you don't dress to stay warm, you dress to survive. What happens when the power pack dies? What happens when it gets so fricken cold, electronics don't work? Yes, it happens.

Oops! I forgot about that, however Li-ion are design to function down to -40C (I don't think I will be going outside if the temperature drop down to -30C).

What would be a good jacket to get IYO?

It's not the battery pack, it's the connections and other parts that often fritz out. It may be something simple to fix when you're inside but, impossible when your outside and your fingers won't function.

Layers are always good and a military parka usually is the cheapest.

If you have $700 to spare, these are the fad right now (have been for years).

Everyone, especially Asians, in Toronto has one. Not going to lie, I want one...

Geothermal specialist/mechanical contractor. (Instrumentation/HVAC/gasfitting/pipefitting/steamfitting/plumbing.)

So you work with Geothermal heat pumps and similar systems? Mostly commercial or residential?

Unless you just have the 700 bucks eating a hole in your pocket your'd be kind of nuts to buy one living out here on the west coast where it rarely dips below -5.
