Guys,

I have an old computer with a Xeon 3430, it has been doing a fine job with file serving and Plex transcoding (prob because I don’t have more than 1 transcoding job running at a time). I am wondering if it’s worth the time/cost to upgrade to something better. The only requirement I need is ECC support. Low wattage would be a great bonus also.

Maybe the newer I3 fits the bill better? Please give me a few recommendations.

Thanks

A simple chip swap will wake it up. Going from the X3430 to an X3480 is a nice bump. Not only is there 900mhz difference at turbo, but the X3480 has hyper-threading and effectively gives you 8 cores instead of 4. BIG difference and easy to do a chip swap. Single thread performance is 40% better also.. Costs you $125 and 20-30 minutes of your time & you'll most likely be happy with it for 2 more years.. Sell your old chip for a few bucks & smile :)
