Recommendation for Data Recovery Service

Has anyone used a data recovery service for a dead HD before? I have a client's HD that a chip on the underside caught on fire! :| It is now unrecognizable in the BIOS, but doesn't make any clicking or grinding noises, so I think the platters are unharmed. This wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so notoriously bad about doing backups. I constantly remind them to change their tapes daily and to email me their logs so I can make sure they're getting good backups, but they never do. On top of that, they installed Quicken on this drive without me configuring it for them to be backed up and therefore their qdf's are *poof* gone.

Soooo....I'm ready and they're willing to send off this drive and I've never had to do this before. Anyone done it before and have a company to recommend? Also, I know it's difficult to estimate prices for this sort of thing, but does anyone know what the usual hourly rate for this sort of service is? General price range for recovery of 2 gigs or so of data? Thanks in advance...

Ontrack. You can do a quote thing online and they'll send you an email with the price. If I recall correctly, it's like $200 for them to look at it and at that point, they will tell you what can be recovered and what the total fee will be. In my experience, these things usually run between $1000 and $1500.

No, actually, it was a somewhat new Maxtor 30GB.
