Hi all,
What's a good recommend on a CD-RW at a good price point? What features should I be looking for?
Thanks
Gary

Give a little info on what you are looking for. Price range,IDE or SCSI,internal or external and info on the computer you are going to put it in will be helpful.

This topic has been brought up many times, you might want to do a search to see what other people have said. Just quickly though, the most reliable IDE CDRW drive right now is probably the Plextor 12/10/32A. The reason is that it has the BURN-Proof technology to prevent buffer underruns. This same technology is found in a few other drives if I'm not mistaken, but you'll find that most people recommend the Plextor due to their proven track record for quality. This drive will run you approximately $230 after some coupons I believe at one of the online stores. Check around and you'll find plenty of posts on it. Good luck!

I recently got my hands on an HP 9300plus and am quite happy with it. It has a decent 4 meg buffer and I have yet to make a coaster. While its not as fast as a plextor (10x4x32) it very reliable. I havent used a plextor since the old 4x6 SCSI days so my opinion is probably biased towards HP. :)

I find people here have the tendancy to throw the Plextor 12x10x32 at everyone regardless of their budget, the type they're looking for(IDE, SCSI, in/external...) and everything.

Hi there,
I should have qualified my question a little:)
I would rather not get a SCSI as it would involve yet another card, unless the benefits are outweighed by the hassle/cost.
I am thinking in the $250 US range if possible.
Thanks

I would like to have the CL 12X10X32 with burn-proof. Its bundled with Nero's burning software.

Plextor is considered king and for good reason. I also have friends who swear by their Ricoh drives. I have an OLD Memorex 2x2x6 drive that has been fine for me other than it's being slow. The only time I had trouble with it was when I bought some generic store brand CDR's, which make great coasters by the way. Anyway, Plextor is tops, but my Memorex was inexpensive and has never given me trouble as long as I use good CDR's. Imation CDR's seem to be the most widely accepted in audio players, at least in my experience. Sony CDR/RW drives are decent as well, but seem to be expensive for the performance they offer.

O.K! In that price range if you shop/search you can find the Plextor 12/10/32 "Burn Proof" model around that price plus shipping. I would stick with Plextor burners because I have yet to see of hear of some one who did not love theirs! The software bundle is not the best for their drives but you can "pick-up" the software you need from friends or purchase it.
P.S. Buy a retail not OEM burner no matter which one you chose!

Another vote for the Plex 12x10x32. Or the identical TDK which you can find at Best Buy. They roll out of the same factory with a different tray snapped into the TDK version.

Simply incredible speed. Reading and writing protected CD's have proven no match for my TDK/CloneCD combination.

Plextor ... is there an echo here? :)

8432a if you don't care about burnproof and the extra speed of the 121032a. 150-30 coupon at buy.com for 120 or ... can't remember what the 121032a are going for nowadays.
