Recommendation for an Apple Laptop

I have almost no experience with Apple computers post 1999.

I wouldn't like a macbook air, one of the laptops would be nice. I'd like to get it off ebay, any suggestions for what to look for?

I like the 13" screens, but maybe they're too small?

15" MBP 2011 is about the best you can get if portability is a concern and 13" feels too small.

But you can get an old 2009 17" model for around $1100 on eBay, and it'd still be an amazing purchase.

$400 is too little. You'd be hard-pressed to even find a decent MacBook with that price, much less a MacBook Pro.

At least $800 is what you'll be looking at for the most part if you want a decent working machine. Otherwise go for a powerful Windows PC if you are low on budget because I think that should give you more value than a Mac.

OP, if you want a 13" screen then I actually think the MBA is the way to go. If you buy or refurb from Apple then you shouldn't need to worry about freezing issues. Or on top of that go on Amazon and pickup an AppleCare.

For most uses I actually think the 13" MBA is a better choice than the 13" MBP because the Air has higher native resolution which is a big deal to me.

With all that said, $400 is too low. We got more than that for my wife's 3 year old White MacBook on eBay. Mac products hold their value very well. It's great when you want to resell yours and upgrade, but it makes it a downer if you want to "break into Apple" on the cheap. But remember, you typically get what you pay for.

the 1280x800 screen is unbearable on anything. even the macbook air has more resolution now. i don't mind it for the air since its just a cruise the net on the couch kind of laptop - or have wife fit in purse laptop - but the 15" was useless so i ended up trading that for a older generation core2duo 2.66 matte 17" which is 1920x1200 and I LOVE IT. the screen rocks. so screen consideration should be #1. also get an SSD - the 5400rpm drives are painful and fail quickly if you drop it. and before prices go up grab 8gb of ram. MBA is not upgradable so we're talking macbook/pro.

Well, I'm keeping my options open. I've realized that 400 is too little, 6-700 too rare and 800 excluded to clearence deals. 1350 is not cheap, but its better than 2k.

Dont be scared off by the clearance deals. $900 gets you a 13" macBook pro that just came out last year... Hardly an old machine by any means... You just dont get the Thunderbolt port, and a slightly slower CPU..

i have a 10" netbook right now which I tolerate but its getting slower despite a defrag, battery life sucks, the OS kinda sucks and i'd like a platform to do video/photo/code editing on.

Called up the local MicroCenter in Orange County and they said their MBP 13.3" is 1099.

So thats 100 bucks off MSRP. Hrmm...

macbook pro 13" was $999 new , 10% off for open box - before the latest rev came out. so $899 open box

now that the new models have devalued the old ones- not to hard to figure it out.
