Hi there,

Can anyone recommend a sturdy reliable proven external hdd. (need to take my data to south korea/thailand.)

Cheers

Sam

Just buy a normal SATA hard drive, and an external USB->SATA hard drive enclosure. You'll get way more for your money.

Agree with Old Hippie; a 60GB notebook drive can be had for $45 - 60 (USD) and a 2.5 external enclosure (CP Technologies, most I've seen have a separate USB power cable) for about $20 and you're good to go.

How much space do you need?

I've had this 2.5" enclosure for almost a year. It's small, very rugged, and keeps the hard drive pretty cool. It's versatile as well since you can power it with an AC adapter, USB or firewire. It also uses an Oxford chip.

As for the hard drive, pick any of these 7200RPM 2.5" hard drives (the Seagates w/ the 5 year warranties are good):

If you need more than 100GB, check out some of these:

Since it's a portable drive and it's bound to be bumped and maybe even dropped, I'd get one with a longer warranty.

If you want portability, go with a 2.5" enclosure. If you want capacities beyond 160GB(200-250GB are nearing release though), go with a 3.5" enclosure. Most of them perform about the same as far as speeds go. They're mostly limited by USB/Firewire bandwidths, which are something liek 30-40MB/s. Go for an enclosure with a reputable bridge chip, such as Cypress, NEC, Oxford Semi, Genesys.
