Recommendation for a MSE Alternative..

So by the looks of things and straight from the horse's mouth that we shouldn't be relying on MSE as your virus protection software..

I haven't kept up with the changes in the anti-virus scene for a long time now and find it surprising that Symantec's norton software is considered pretty good by many users! Times haves indeeed changed.

What are the free alternatives users normally recommend these days?

You could also go over to Frys.com and check out their ad. They usually have a major brand antivirus or internet security product free or very cheap after rebate available.

I'm considering switching some clients to Bitdefender Cloud Security. Does anyone have any experience with this one?

Did you run an Internet speed test before you installed Avast and after?

Yep no difference, also checked Task Manager for CPU and ram usage,so low not even worth meantioning.

Avast 2014 is trimmed down compared to Avast 8, in a good way.

Is that the free version? I'm liking my Bitdefender free as it will stop threats with a warning sign in the browser before I go to the site. When I was running Avast I never got that. Has that changed?

I just took Avast 2013 off my wife`s laptop computer.
She was complaining of slow internet.
I ran a speed test before and after.....a huge difference in speed!

I just loaded Bitdefender on her computer and no difference in speed before loading or after!!

With regards to net slow down you have two options ie disable web shield or try this fix,
I followed this suggestion found on this thread: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=120600.0, and had the issue fixed. Do this:

avast! GUI -> Security -> Web Shield -> Settings -> Main Settings
Enable: Scan traffic from well-known browser processes only

Ater that, post here if this has prevented Web Shield from blocking connection in your PCs.

Enabling this doesn't make avast! any less secure from what I've read
Apparently it has happened on Avast 8 as well for some users.

Should do,yes I'm using free version of Avast 2014 ,as to net slow down see my previous posts, btw does did a net speed test again still no slow down or issues for me, up to 11.5Mbps download speed for my PC which is max my telephone line can handle due to distance from the phone exchange.

I do use Firefox(still very snappy browsing) with no third party firewall,ie using Windows default firewall with my Netgear router.

Btw I did try Bitdefender free version previously (on Win8)and it slowed my browsing down,so figure that one out.

I'm using Win8.1 RTM Pro x64 at the moment.

I personally recommend Avast, Fortinet or Panda cloud. Not a fan of BitDefender lately. The free version was buggy as all hell (for myself and many others) and the company's support & business practices are a bit shady.
