I have been taking a lot of road trips and traveling a lot more in general in the last year. I would like to record my trips.

I am looking for a decent camera that is idiot proof, takes great pics, can be mounted on a tri-pod with a timer (for solo trips), and is small and compact (space on a bike is limited). I'd like to stay in the $400 range if possible.

The Canon G9 or SD1100 look interesting, but as a clueless newb, I suspect there are better choices out there.

So what would the gurus of Anandtech recommend?

you'll want a wider angle lens than the G9 or SD1100 provide. i'd say look for one with a 28 mm or shorter wide angle. the G9 isn't the most compact camera around, either.

The G9 is arguably one of the best non-dSLR cameras on the market today. It has incredible flexability, RAW capabilities, and most manual features. I have a friend who has produced incredible panoramics with it.

I would say the G9 if you wanted a DSLR but had no room, what's wrong with learning a camera?
