I just signed up for Comcast and they will be coming out to do installation for me. What is a good, cheap and reliable modem to buy? New is OK.

On the other hand, I looked on Craigslist and there wasn't any at the time. I'm thinking of maybe renting for the 1st month (3 bucks) while browsing Craigslist in the time being for a 2nd hand one.

Comcast usually rents out the Motorola surfboard series. The SB5101 is fine and the SB5120 is also fine. You can get them on ebay for like $30 or so.

Here is a new one for $25 after rebate. http://www.fatwallet.com/forum..._key=y&keyword1=sb5101 read the responses it seems like the rebate might not work so YMMV (may or may not work) since the UPC's people are getting are a little different.

Most any DOCSIS modems will be fine but you can't go wrong with Motorola. Just get a SB5101 or newer. I have tested many modems and Moto is the one I've used at home for several years.

Just make sure that any modem you are buying is docsis 2 compliant. I've had good service out of linksys modems over the years.

Cable so called Modem is Not a big brainer, whatever is compatible with the service would be OK.

Personally if they only take down $3 for declining rental I would Not bother to buy one.

Why? Because money wise for the long run it few $$ lose or gain.

On the other hand if something goes wrong with the service you would have support trouble.

They might claim that they do not know what is wrong since it is Not their modem, and thus they can not solve the problem.

If it is their Modem they are obligated to come for free to your resident and at least make sure that the output from their modem is OK.
