Recommendation for 2600K/2600 system

I'm looking to build a 2600K/2600 system. Would appreciate recommendations.

My budget is $800-1000. Buying in US of course.

I have a 9800GT Video card that I might probably resuse if that doesn't slow down the system too much.

Mostly for general use. Video encoding and normal gaming. Just tired of my slow 5 year old system. Thanks guys!

You'd save $75-$100 by going to the i5-2500/i5-2500K. With such a tight budget, that's a significant savings.

The i7-2600K does have its advantages...don't get me wrong, but with your budget being so limited, it hardly makes sense to spend 10% of that budget for the (slightly) better CPU.

Now if your budget was $3000...

Ha ha. You convinced me. I am already eyeing the i5-2500k cpu.

It definitely looks like it. In the passmark site, 2600k was rated at 9700+ vs 6700+ for 2500K though which is confusing me. 2500K does looks like better value regardless though.

Passmark is a purely synthetic benchmark with little to no bearing on real world performance. Ignore it.

Here's a $1K build for video editing and gaming (you will need a new GPU for any reasonable definition of gaming):

i5 2500K + GA-P67A-UD3 combo
$335
G.Skill DDR3 1333 8GB $78
GTX 460 1GB $155 AR
OCZ Agility 2 60GB $115
Samsung F3 1TB $65
Samsung DVD Burner $20
Antec Neo ECO 520W $39 AR Apromo
Antec Three Hundred $60
Total: $867 AR Apromo

There's enough space left in the budget to buy however many of these WD Green 2TB drives that you think you will need for bulk storage.

You could probably get a 570 on sale if he used up the rest of the budget or wait for the 560 in the next week or two.

That's true, but I figured that even a GTX 460 would blow the OP's mind since he was thinking that a 9800GT would be sufficient.

Thank you! This was very helpful! I just pulled the trigger on th purchase. I have a spare HD and will buy the 560 when it comes out. The rest came to right under $700 before AR ($25). Bought the Antec Dark fleet instead and bought the Asus dvd burner.

Hope you enjoy it 😉

Sounds good, I just hope that you have a spare GPU to use. The P67 doesn't support the Sandy Bridge's IGP, and you probably be dying to put the beast together!

Yes, the 9800 GT for now until hopefully the 560 comes out. I heard IGP isn't very powerful so I wouldn't use it anyway. Can't wait to put it together! Thank you for your help! 🙂

You're welcome! Let us know if you encounter any problems in the build.
