I need to get a new display device really soon and I say display device, because I'm not sure whether to go for another CRT or move up to LCD. I put a lot of hours on my monitor that my dad used for two years then was handed down to me. After eight years of heavy service, the screen wraps inward from the bottom.

If I'm going to get a CRT, I don't want to spend more than $250. Twice that for LCD.

You don`t say if gaming is important to you, however LCD wise the NEC 1760NX and Hitachi CML174SXW are both good choices since they have a fast response time of 16ms which is good for gaming.

I recently, well in fact just today recieved my Viewsonic VP171B LCD panel. This display was discussed in a thread here recently (which lcd have 16ms response time). All in all Im very glad I went with this lcd. I have one "dead" SUB pixel, blue, in the upper left hand corner. If it wasnt for monitordirects online toolkit I would have never noticed. In fact, thats about the only time I ever notice it really.

Back to the panel. The biggest reason I ended up going with the Viewsonic is because of the antiglare coating, which the NEC does not feature. The stand included with the viewsonic also pivots, raises, tilts, etc etc. I have nothing against the NEC panel, its just that these features on the Viewsonic pushed me to this panel. In the end, I am very happy I went with this.

On a CRT, I would recommend a nice NEC Diamondtron monitor. That is what I had previously and it worked great, cant remember which model however. I think they can be had for well under 250, so no problem there.

I also forgot to meantion that I`ve read good feedback on the LG 1710S and 1710B LCD monitor(20ms response time) which should also be considered to if you go LCD.

I don't do any gaming at all and good contrast and brightness are the greatest priority. Most of them are $450 to $500 and there are so many to choose from within that price range. I did however forget completely about the issue of possible dead pixels with LCDs.

If I'm going to go with a CRT, it needs to have all the convergence, pincushion, geometry settings. I have a nice Sony monitor beside the one I'm using and its convergence is off(colored shadow on edges of characters) and since there's no settings, I can't do anything about it. In my opinion Sony makes great tubes, but their control circuitry on their entry line computer monitors really blows.

Budget: <$500 if going 17" LCD, <$200 if going CRT

I`ll vouch for that, or more specifically, the Hitachi CML174 Series. I have one, and i play alot of games. TFTs are just as good as CRTs now for gaming imo, and in the opinions of people who have also brought a <20ms TFT.
