Recommend to me a PSU

Steve

Lifer
Just a standard ATX PSU, but with the following criteria:

- Black. The fan grille being black helps too, but I can get that painted easily enough
- 20 pin + 4 pin connectors
- Modular, so I can cut down on the number of cables
- sleeved cabling helps
- SATA connectors optional (not decided on all my drives yet)
- relatively quiet

As for wattage, somewhere in the ballpark of 400 watts will do fine. Even 350 will cut it.

Thanks! 🙂

Budget: reasonable. Not too worried about the price as long as it's not stupidly expensive.

In any case I have to wait until I re-join the ranks of working folks again.

Those both look like very good suggestions. Thanks guys, and I am still open to others. I will definitely investigate those when the time comes.

This would probably get more notice in the Cases & Cooling section.

There are few that are better for the money than the Enhance ENP-5140/5150GH from eWiz via Froogle. You don't mention what size case you plan to use (will a full ATX PSU fit?) or what the rest of the system is so sort of flying blind. Most could use a 350W or so PSU if the power is distributed properly among the rails and sometimes the Seasonic 330 or 380 are on sale - excellent HTPC power.

I said, "Just a standard ATX PSU" 😉

For the record, here are the system specs:
MSI K7N2-ILSR
AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 2GB RAM
Radeon X1600 Pro, ATI HDTV Wonder
two optical drives, one hard drive
All in a Lian-Li PC-V880B case

One of the Seasonics then if on sale otherwise the Enhance 5140 - has been under $60. at eWiz via Froogle. Has active PFC and universal AC voltage (90 - 240V - no voltage switch).

5140 via Froogle

See the review at http://www.psuinquisitor.com - the Silverstone Element ST50 is basically the same as the 5150 and there is a review of the ST50 there too.

Well, if you must have modular in that price range, the only ones you should consider are the neohe and the liberty. However, if you broaden your horizons a bit by accepting maybe just sleaved cables and no modular, you could get a better deal potentially. The enhance is very good, especially for the price. Not only that, but it will probably lasts you through many other pcs you may build. It will prolly be overkill for that setup, but for $65, you can't do much better. A brief overview in case you're too lazy😉 It has 28amps combined on the 12v rails, enough to power an x1950xtx, and has 80% efficiancy, making it quiet and cool as well. I don't think the cables are sleaved actually, enhance focuses on quality and stability rather than bling and ammenities. You can sleave them yourself for like $2. Like zepper said, jonnyguru's reviews are godly. Very in depth and informative, and he may have some psu's on his site that would pertain to your situation, though I've found that he generally reviews psus in the higher wattage, and price range. Another recommendation would be the 330w seasonic s12, which would probably end up being the same price as the enhance, just with sleaved cables and smart fan control, making it marginally quieter. Not sure that would not power an x1950xtx with an overclocked cpu though... only like 22 amps combined or something. Hope this was slightly informative!
