Recommend to me a good POE+ switch for home use.

Hello all,

I have been investigating home surveillance equipment. I have more or less decided to build my own computer and run ispyconnect or milestone or netcamcenter (or something similar) with my own POE switch. I already have a dedicated gigabit switch so I really only need something that adds POE+ ports. I have looked at the injectors, but think I will be adding 6 or so cameras so getting a complete switch probably makes more sense.

I haven't decided on the cameras yet, but would like to keep PTZ (pan tilt and zoom) cameras as an option so would probably want POE+ availability. I have searched here and found a few "recommedation" threads, but they were old and weren't for POE+.

I expect my budget would be as inexpensively as possible, but don't see myself spending over $400 on this switch. Please let me know if you have suggestions.

This one scares me because the budget is 70W - one PTZ camera can easily run 30W, so two would take up the entire device. Even if I run only one, then almost half of the switch is taken with one device and I would be lucky to get 3 other devices hooked up. I could see myself running out of "budget" and still not having more than 4 or 5 devices.
 
It being unmanaged shouldn't be an issue for home use. In some office scenarios I can see it being not an optimum solution but unless you have a more complicated network than I think you likely have that should be fine. Sorry about the first recommendation, didn't realize a PTZ camera could take that much juice.

No big deal. My knowledge is 100% theoretical so in practice a PTZ might not get to 30W - I only know what I've read. I know of people who have been bitten by a low power budget on an 8 port switch, but don't know what they were running to over-extend it. I figure for $50, it makes sense to not even take the risk.

If this is going to be for home use you are probably better off using injectors instead of a POE+. Reason being all the POE+ switches that I know of have really loud fans, typically 40-60mm fans because of the form factor. Unless you have your switch in a closet away from everything noiseless injectors probably the only option.
 
I can suggest Trendnet POE switches. They are the best bang.
8 ports total, 4 POE ports Older model. TPE-S44
The POE+ standard gives you 30 watts per ports. This will run the newer PTZ cameras and such.
I guess, they are the best simple POE switch to get.
