Medieval Total War :)...... By the way, the must have strategy game for 2004 (agruably the best, in my opinion) will be the new Rome Total War coming in September!

If you like strategy and if you would like to be in a battle that looks and feels like the movie "Troy"... get this game!!!!

You didn't specify your preference for real time vs turn based strategy.....you have some of both here. I would agree with all the recommendations so far and would add Alpha Centauri as a turned based game.

Good point! Have you tried any of the total war games? Check out the info I linked to on Rome Total War. You get the best of both worlds, turn based map and real time battles :)

StarCraft

WarCraft III + TFT

Nothing else is quite that good. Battle.net is very nice and has loads of features in TFT. The single player campaigns and cinematics are excellent as well.

If you like Fantasy turn-based, you have alot of choices: Heroes of Might & Magic, Disciples 2 and Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic. AoW2 has a good random map generator for unlimited maps.

i have been having fun lately with desert rats vs. afrika korps.

also i would recommend:
C&C series (generals is nice)
Close Combat
I played the Silent Storm 2 demo, was kinda fun, but i found it somewhat hard.

In no certain order. . .

Civilization III, Cleopatra and the Pharoh expansion, Tropico (both editions), Rise of Nations, Alpha Centauri (a must), and MOO (the origanal)

Some of these are no longer really in production, but most are available on 10$ cheap disks or on ebay for dirt. . .

I'll throw in Kohan (and the expansion pack).

It's RTS, but the pace is slow enough that you never consider it a clickfest. Unlike many of the other games mentioned, Kohan is not dominated by throwing large masses of troops into the fray and picking up the pieces when the dust settles. Tactics (flanking, etc) are a very important part of the game. The AI in the single player campaign is fantastic.

I have never seen anyone give a less than stellar review of it.

C&C Generals (if you have a muscular box)
Warcraft III (I got all misty eyed at the end)
Age of Mythology (one of the best RTS games ever)
