I'm still looking for a Christmas gift for my roommate/landlord- I am thinking about a box set of classical music, but I want to make sure they're (very high) quality performances, as she's quite a cultured individual.

Any recommendations would be great! Amazon is preferable (Prime FTW). ~$75 budget. :)

Anything by Mozart or Rachmanov or Bethoven. Everyone knows this.

tchaikovsky

Thanks, but I'm looking for specific performances that are known to be performed at a world-class level -- not just an average orchestra..and I'm not really sure where to go for that.

A $75 box set might be a pile of stuff she already has, like yet another set of Mozart piano performances.

How about individual CDs of high quality that are semi-obscure but fit mainstream classical tastes?

Two of my favorites:
Sharon Isbin - Bach, complete lute suites - Amazon ASIN: B00008LP1Q
http://www.amazon.com/J-S-Bach-Compl...1294438&sr=1-1

Lindberg - Vivaldi: Complete Works for Italian Lute - ASIN: B0000016BR
http://www.amazon.com/Vivaldi-Comple...0&sr=1-1-spell

I will check those out - thanks!

Chopin is always good for remarkable piano music. At a christmas party last week, a professional piano tuner explained to me the importance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons regarding the separate tuning requirements for each "season" (musical piece).

Most of the stuff below is polyphonic choral music.

This is a sampler of pre-Renaissance choral music. The performers are all top-notch and the price is quite good.

Les tres riches heures du Moyen Age: A Medieval Journey [Box Set]

All of these are great choral pieces:

Arvo Pärt: Da Pacem - Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir

Arvo Pärt: De Profundis - Paul Hillier Theatre of Voice

Arvo Pärt: Passio

Arvo Pärt: I Am The True Vine

For something a bit different:

Missa Mexicana by Andrew Lawrence-King and The Harp Consort

In general you can't go wrong with the Anonymous 4 (except their early American music)

Edit to add more music:

These are bit less refined but still great music.

On the Way to Bethlehem (Music of the Medieval Pilgrim) Ensemble Oni Wytars & Ensemble Unicorn
Listen to track five if you want to fall in love with someone based on voice alone.

The Black Madonna - Ensemble Unicorn

When purchasing music that has been recorded, the recording engineering is far more important that who is performing. Usually, if there is great recording engineering, the orchestra isn't half bad either. Although, it is very difficult to find the outstanding performances recorded by an outstanding engineer.

Check out Telarc and Reference Recordings for well-engineered disks (there are a few others as well). For Romantic era, I can't get enough of Rachmaninoff. Excellent symphonic music.

I went with these--

1: Vivaldi: Complete Works for Italian Lute
2: The Art of the Baroque Trumpet, Vol. 1 (Niklas Eklund)
3: The Köln Concert
4: J.S. Bach: Complete Lute Suites

Three of the above were recommended here, and the other (#2) has stellar reviews. Thanks all! :)

Try some Piazolla. Make sure you get recordings of him playing and not any tribute shit.

A lot of people get hooked after listening a bit.
