I'm probably going to finally get a cell phone with CallPlus service since it's so cheap.
apparently to activate a phone with them, I just need a tri-mode TDMA. I've never shopped for a cell phone before, so please tell me anything I should be aware of.

here's what I need:
easy to read, hi-res screen
color not a must, but would be nice
good organizer functions
good reception
a fairly loud speaker (a lot of my friends have new nokias and the speaker on them is barely audible)

I'd also be interested in spending more to get a camera phone, but are there any camera phones that support tri-mode TDMA?

TDMA phones are getting more and more rare now, since it's getting replaced by GSM... Why don't you go with a carrier that supports GSM instead of going with TDMA?

Yeah, seriously. TDMA is the runt of the litter when it comes to cell phone technologies. Even the 50 year old CDMA technology is more efficient. Also, unless you live out in the boondocks without digital service, or travel through rural areas often, tri-mode phones (or dual mode with analog) are about as useful as a row of nipples sticking out of your forehead.

well, I'm going to get service from this odd unheardof carrier called CallPlus because it's the only one I can afford. their website is useless, but a member of the forums said you can activate any tri-mode TDMA phone with them. I pm'd him for more info about CallPlus but I'm waiting for a response

I'm new to cellphones. Why are tri mode phones useless?

And what are the "good" phones referred to?

I'm in norcal. the cheapest rate from any major carrier is $20/mo with a contract for 60mins/mo.

Callplus is prepaid, no contract. $35 to activate a phone and get 100 minutes. mintues never expire, you just have to make at least 1 call per month. $10/25mins to add minutes. free text message receiving. uses AT&T network. this is a great deal for me since it will probably take me more than a year to use up those 100 minutes at the frequency I call. however free text message receiving is something I would use all the time.

haha, don't be so sure. when i first got a cell a few years ago i swore that i wouldn't need more than 60 minutes a month. now, i easily pull 1500 min.

I agree completely. My first plan was 250/250. At first I never used all the minutes. Then I went to another plan. Hmm, I think it was 400 some mintes, don't remember exactly. Now I'm at 750 each month and went over this month. So trust me and others, your useage will go up. Besides, even having the $20 plan will help your credit:)
