I just got my Abit IS7 board with 512 pc3200 corsair memory and a 2.6 Ghz Pentium 4
i have this Power supply its a Power Man FSP300-60GI
i dont think that will cut it am i right>>?
im not sure

i read this article at Toms Hardware Guide.com and it said they recommend the Fortron Source FSP400-60PFN (453 W)
how do i know if it has the ATX12V form factor?
they also said that the Zalman's ZM400A-APF (447 W) was good
and the Antec True 480P (484 W)was good too
i don't care much about noise
efficiency is key

the periphrials im using are
a CD Rom drive
60 GB 7200RPM WD 8mb cache HDD
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
A IEEE 1394/USB card (Came with Motherboard)
2.1 Altec Lansing 120W speakers plugs into wall
a scanner
my video camera a Sony DCR-TRV27
i think that's it maybe a cable modem

i will be editing video, pictures and audio and playing good games

well the question is what do you think i should get?
will that power supply i have work??
i will try to overclock

Thanks for reading
Hope ya can help

Intel lists SPI, which is FSP's brand. FSP also manufactures Zalman, PowerMan, AOpen, Nexus, Conrad and Verax -the main differences being the fan that is included.

You may just want to try the FSP 300 you have first (might require a mainboard power adapter) but it is probably borderline for 12V line amps when using the Radeon 9700 as well. Their 400 is definitely more robust and an excellent unit. One thing to consider is that Tom's models, being in the EU, have power factor correction. The Antec brand is made by CWT and outside of the EU lacks PFC to cut costs so I would recommend one of the FSP's which do have it (the FSP and Zalman models mentioned have Active PFC). PFC is more efficient so runs cooler and quieter and has a lower operating cost. In addition, Antec has two fans and thus only room for small heatsinks. The TruePower name is a marketing gimmick, especially when it comes to CPU's and GPU's which draw power from the 12V (like yours), thus making independent 3.3V and 5V lines irrelevent. Since buying Antec means paying more for that feature (or getting less in the way of other components) it is poor value.

well said.
Get a Fortron FSP400PFN 400W Power Supply.
I always prefer one fan with huge heatsinks in PS. (two fans = marketing gimmick)

thanks for the help guys 🙂
if that 300w is borderline good i am not gonna try it

i heard that some power supplys might not work with certain mother boards
do you know if there is a list like Intel has>?
i noticed Fortron wasn;t on that P4 ATX12V list but SPI Was (the SPI FSP400-60PFN is on there)
what does the 60 stand for?

should i get a SPI?

what is the site for FSP? i found FSUSA.com is there a better one?
where should i buy it froM??

Thanks fer readin

my Antec true power 550 is doing very well with my 2500+ @ 2.3ghz 1.975v 2 cdroms and 4 hard drives plus extra bs my rails are nice and sweet

3.30 = 3.31
5.00 = 5.03
12.00 = 12.16

they stay this way full time under load and idle

ok then i called my local best buy and they dont carry fortron they just have Antec
he said they have a SL400
i was lookin at Antec's Site and it looks like the SL400 is a little better than the FSP400PFN
i know jack squat about power supplies though

the question is will the SL400 work with my computer??

Thx fer readin
Master Tablu

Yes, you'll be fine. I'm running a TruePower 330 w/my tbred @ 2.2ghz and a couple hds and cdroms. I don't have any problems with it. I really don't think all these 400+ watt PSUs are needed unless you have 10+ hds or dual cpus.

so your saying the SL400 would be overkill?
i could get the SL350 and that would be fine?

Thx fer tha help 🙂

i see Intel says 250 Watt Min for their P4
and in the Abit IS7 Manual they recommend 300W

So 350 should do it yes?? or i need a 400?
i will be tryin to overclock this 🙂

Thanks fer reading
im going to best buy today can ya help me FAST
Master Tablu

The SL350 would probably do the job, but it is far from the best choice. Antec's own specs show a much lower MTBF than their TP models. Intel's recommendations are usefull, but the requirements of the graphics chip are just as significant. ATI recommends at least 300W for Radeon 9700. Next generation will be 350W. This is to ensure that even the crappiest PSU's can deliver enough 12V amps. A good quality 250W unit is better than a crappy 400W. As Tom's review revealed, FSP's specs are very conservative and you know you are paying for design and components instead of marketing.
