Recommend PCI video card with DVI for under $70

I would have said a PCI Radeon 8500/9100, but it doesn't appear that they make those anymore. (Instead they replaced them with slower 9200's? )

I'm not really sure what I would recommend in that price range....I assume this won't be for any gaming? If it's not, then any of the cards with DVI should really work for you...

As far as I can tell, all the Radeon 9200-series cores are the same (as far as features go, anyway). The only difference I see between the two video cards you linked is that the second one has a slightly faster core clock (240MHz vs. 200MHz).

There are some GeForce 5500 and 5700 variants, which for obvious reasons I prefer over ATI.

Be warned that the fan on those usually sucks, I will put a Zalman fanless cooler on my PCI 5200 (for quad-head) the moment my heatpipe for the 5900XT arrives. Obviously that costs you one PCI slot extra.

Out of the two that you posted I would recommend the 9250. Rosewill seems to be NewEggs personal rebrand of units, and no one is truely sure as to how well they stand against other makers, but I would be willing to bet they do a bit better than the average power color varient.

I'd actually recommend the 5200 chipset options. The 9250 and the 5200 should actually perform in a pretty similar manner. The 5200 has DX9 feature support that the 9250 doesn't have. On the other hand, it's tough to beat ATI's DVD playback hardware assist.

If you watch DVDs a lot on your PC, the 9250 is the way to go. If you mostly play games instead of watch movies, you might be happier with the 5200.

Either way, they're both a lot of card for the money, so you can't go too far wrong.

Very hard, but radeon 9200 or 9250 should be fine, The 5200 supports DX9 but it is total crap at DX9 games and very slow with DX8.1 games. I wouldn't say that 5200 is a DX9 card because a DX9 game won't just run playable with it.

Thanks I'll see if they watch a lot of DVD's or not.

right.

but its fast enough in DX9 to give a significant advantage in IQ and performance in windows longhorn

or so i'm guessing

there is 0% chance a DX8 card like the 9200 can beat a 5200 in IQ on longhorn
so speed is kinda moot there.

and if he got a 5200 ultra, its about like a GF3 in games
about as good as your going to get at this price point.

otherwise a plain 6600 non-GT sounds like his cup of tea.. quite a bit more gaming power there. but over $70 then.

5200 Ultra or ATI 9100

forget the 9200, no DX9 and not nearly as fast as the old 9100s

you want either DX9 or the speed that the old 9100s had.
a 9200 isnt going to blow the doors off a 5200Ultra anyday of the week.
